Title: YourDDO and API access
Post by karatekid on Mar 29th, 2013 at 9:34am
I signed the petition (which will accomplish nothing) to keep API access for YourDDO (JJ's site); but I had a random thought while skimming through the related thread.

If so many folks are upset about this, the operators and contributors to DDOWiki should take DDOWiki offline for a time as a protest.  Alternatively, specific authors of articles can take their content down, as well.

With the compendium being a POS and coming down as well, we have one alternative - DDOWiki.

One community-generated resource can get the point across for the other dying.  Let Turbine see how much they HAVEN'T done in terms of useful reference material for a little.

Maybe DDORealms, as well.

Turbine has probably made a copy of DDOWiki in case of that happening. Think back to what happened when Aranticus deleted all of his guides for new players.

That musta been before I got in the game?  (Winter 2009)

If nothing else, it will generate bad vibes, and marketing people don't like bad vibes.

When Aranticus left the game he was a little pissed, so he deleted all his guides from the forums. They restored everyone of them.

The wiki is prolly Creative Commons licensed, so I am pretty sure they can grab it. It is way better than anything they have produced internally so I am a little scared to think what they would do with it if they controlled it.

yourddo isn't JJs site.  JJ owns cubicleninja.

JJ actually took his site down for a time for some reason or another, and it sucked. Badly. It doesn't really hurt Turbine at all, just the poor players who have to use 3rd party sites because the official stuff is so god-awful.

Think it was over artificer not being free or available for favor unlock when it was first released. My memory may be bad though.

He was pissing and moaning about some change that was grossly insignificant compared to the majority of things they fucked up.

Yup, that was it.

Artificers not being free for VIP, or something? Then Turbine put a tiny disclaimer on an in-game ad and he decided that was as much face as he was going to save, and declared he'd "won".

Who the fuck cares if the Compendium goes away?  It's always been an outdated eyesore.

If you want to contribute to the community, then go update DDOwiki.

Yeah, the Compendium sucked balls. Good riddance I say.

But if we lose the compendium, we lose great sources of information on character building such as [url]compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Team_Sorcerer

I think you misunderstood my point - there was no way in hell that was meant to defend the compendium.

Kill it with fire!

This is what happens when you make a fansite based off broken buggy Turbine stuff. It gets abandoned and dies!

Is anyone really surprised? The fact myddo was borked caused yourddo to be just as fucked up. Amazing folks are actually giving a rats ass about it. Same players who called for heads to roll when myddo got launched are now whining about its removal. Fuckin spazz tards!

I think you are misunderstanding; The people who complained about myddo were complaining about certain functions of it.  The APIs were a by-product that produced products that provided better info that myddo. Whenever you produce something better and more useful than Turbine created (such as the vault when compared to the forums), they promptly try to shut it down.

If only I could credit turbine with this

I like the idea.  Take DDOWiki down like Wikipedia went down to make a point.

It could be a faux take down (with a link to click through to get to the actual content), but with a message of protest about the API removal.

Cordovan makes it sound like they want to make a new API Someday™, but you know how things go at Turbine.

Also, Turbine doesn't care one iota about ddowiki, or about what players think about ddowiki - pointless.

You are right.  But, it would raise a hyper awareness within the player community about what they are taking away, and might make a sparkling opportunity for moar forum rage entertainment.

Think of all of the petition threads we could get going...
