This is sad...because it is an easily handled disease. I speak from experience.  I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic (I.E. fat bastard) last October.  My sugars and cholesterol were through the roof.  At 34, it was a wake up call...do something or die young..  I hit the gym, reworked my diet and lifestyle...one year later and 50lbs lighter I feel great.  I'm completely off the diabetes meds, my sugars and cholesterol are fine.  I only take just a low dose cholesterol pill.  I'm healthier and happier than I have been in years.

Type I is a bigger deal but it is still fully manageable now a days.  My grandfather had both legs amputated because of it...no one should have to go through that.

I'm with you on the victim thing.  My 7yr old daughter was diagnosed with Type I about a year ago, and I'm doing every thing I can to make sure she understands that she, and not her disease, controls her destiny.
