I wish they'd just get off their asses and make some interesting and tactical ways to play other classes that would encourage smart gameplay instead of nerfing casters. I guess that's just too fucking hard. That "power creep" argument can fuck off too. That ship sailed a long time ago.

Why are they doing all that shit?
Hard to say. I think they're trying to level the playing field a bit (on the equipment side) between newer players and people who have every concievable piece of gear that's ever been in the game.

Hi everyone!
Thank you for the feedback on the haunted idea.
We've evaluated the Haunted mechanic to be too complex to introduce at this time. As mentioned by several posters in this thread, it's really Wail of the Banshee that is the source of the balance problems that we seek to address, and it's more logical to constrain changes to the spell.
We're planning on removing the death protection from non-boss creatures in Epic difficulty and changing Wail of the Banshee from being a spell that instantaneously kills up to 20 enemies for 10 sp more than Finger of Death, to a kill-over-time model similar to, but still better than, the Clr/FvS spell Implosion.
Wail of the Banshee
SP Cost: 50
Cooldown: 60 seconds (50 for Sorcerers)
You emit a terrible scream, creating a deadly area around yourself for 6 seconds. Every 2 seconds, two nearby enemies must make a fortitude save or die. On a successful fortitude save, the target takes 1 to 4 negative levels. You are free to perform other actions while Wail of the Banshee is active.
D&D Dice: Slays multiple living enemies or deals 1d4 negative levels if they save.
We're planning on continuing to monitor the effectiveness of instant death effects (and necromancy in general) and will continue to make changes as necessary. (Especially when the enhancements revamp appears. It's possible that the "Haunted" concept, instead of being a debuff, will reappear as a positive effect for characters that invest in the Pale Master tree.)

So very much less horrible than HtK and Haunting.
I really do think that they just stir up shit so that whatever final change appears will just be a relief (c.f. Chattering Ring/Greater Halfling Bane).

Much less horrible, but I don't get why it's kill over time.
I guess you can't call it an instakill anymore.

Better than implosion, because it'll keep trying against mobs that fail their save--and those mobs just got enervated.
Does it immediately hit 2, and then 2 more every 2 sec, for 8, or does it only hit 6?

Yeah but what if it's trying to target mobs that are immune to wail.
And don't be silly. Of course it starts at 2 seconds in, not immediately.

Hmm... I think 10 targets would be a better solution with the extended cd, but its better than their other shit for sure.

Implosion works on more things as well. Not a huge amount of undead at endgame, but that could change with time. I havn't bothered with the beta really, but I've read that there's drow Necromancers that summon a fair amount of Undead?
PM's will still be awesome tho.

Call it 1/2 to 3/4 of the quest have either undead to start with, or necros that raise fallen mobs as undead. eally do think at this point they're just going "ohshit, what about the old stuff *slaponbandaid*"

My favorite name I saw for it so far was Stutter of the Banshee.
Is it really that hard to just lower the hard cap from 20 to 10 or something? I still don't know why they're bothered, but if they are then a very simple solution is, you know, simple.

They knew what they were doing all along.
They showed us two scenarios that could be but didn't have any intention to implement those horrible ideas.
They fucken sat around the table and brainstormed of some bad idea and I bet they had a pool on how bad of a forum rage it would be.
Then they showed the wail nerf.
Knowing how bad the other possibilities were, forumites are not in as much as a tizzy had they started with the wail nerf instead. Some are still upset but it isn't quite as bad.
They were going to do this with wail to begin with.
They played the forumites.

Sounds like it's time for the "which is more likely?" game!
1) Turbine has once again pulled off a flawless double secret conspiracy purely to mess with the small percentage of players who avidly read the forums, because it's impossible for people in a position of authority to make any mistakes ever.
2) Turbine can't find their ass with both hands and a map, so they resorted to their standard MO of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Plus it loses a lot of its oomph as a kill over time spell. I know I click Implosion to thin stuff out while I do other stuff, and it feels a lot more anticlimatic than Wail. Would be a shame to change it I think.
I must be feeling optimistic this morning because I plonked something to that effect in the thread

Haunting idea is gayer than Lionclaws aka spelljammer. No need for it what so ever. Maybe my servers just suck (khyber) (orien) but on those severs not a ton of casters can insta kill things on epics without help of symbol of death, Circle of death , energy drain. Even with those I've seen casters have trouble.
If someone wastes their life playing this game so much that they get dc's high enough fuck it let em who cares. let them think they are uber in a imaginary world. they probably have no friends or loved ones they need to feel special.

These Insta-kill changes are just fucking stupid period.
If the "talent" at Turbine could get there heads out of there asses and design CONTENT around the game mechanics instead of changing game mechanics to fit the CONTENT we'd find balance.
They the DEVS and us the PLAYERS can't find balance in the system with too many sobbing nancys wah wahing about shit in game with the inherent tunnel vision Turbine developers have with regards to content design.
Maybe Turbine Developers need a crash course in DUNGEONMASTERING 101 to get their shit straight.
Maybe go back and brush up on CORE GODDAMN D&D GAME MECHANICS and design CONTENT around that.

Y'know. What really gets me with all these folks bitching about the disparity, is that accounting for instas is likely the only thing keeping some of these "big numbers is best" designers from herpaderping their way to 10 times the mob hit-points we see now.
Almost tempted to just let it happen and go off to do some D3 for a few months with the occasional pop by the forums with some popcorn.
I'm not sure that would really help. Early Inferno mobs have 6, sometimes 7 digit HP on elites and if you're not stacking mitigation they kill you in 1-2 hits. It only gets much higher from there.
If not wanting high numbers is your problem D3 is not your solution.
