have you made it to end game yet?
how deep does customizing your weapons really go?
Haven't made it to end game yet, no.
As far as customizing your weapons, it's fairly extensive.
Each weapon has the ability to have up to four mod slots. Stock, barrel, mag & scope. Not all weapons have slots on them to begin with. But you can add a mod slot to any weapon that needs one (randomly placed if there is more than one slot without the ability to be modded yet).
It takes ten minutes (and some ark salvage) to add a slot, during which time you cannot equip the weapon. It takes five minutes to remove any mods you've added, with the same non-equip stipulation. But beyond that it happens in the background and you can continue playing.
During the time that either of these things are happening, you cannot add any mods to any weapons (which is instantaneous after a few clicks to set it up), because your modding process is tied up with integrating the slot or removing the mods.
The mods themselves are widely varied between usefulness, and once you get to higher level they can be found as synergy packs. IE: if you have one mod of a specific synergy, you get bonus A. With two you get bonus B. With three, bonus C. And with all four synergy mods you get bonus D. These are cumulative, and in addition to the basic attributes of the mods.
So getting an entire set of one synergy, or a half set of two different synergies, will probably be the way to go depending on what you want out of the weapon.
