That would be the aforementioned GDC announcement, new game based off a WB IP. 

Interesting that they are trying a MOBA.  They would be gunning for League of Legends which absolutely owns this space.

the genre originated as mods for strategy games.

basically they're like a strategy game, but you only have one thingy to control. no bases, workers, or anything else.

This is correct another name for these type of games is DotA style games named after the Warcraft mod, Defense of the Ancients.  It is essentially an RTS but with a twist.  In these type of games you or a group engage another group in an effort to control the map or conquer a base.  There are generally minion type mobs who will independently battle it out all over the map and the object is for you and/or your teammates to use your powers to turn the tide of battle.  Think the final battle in Lord of the Rings where you have thousands of soldier and a handful of heroes who are control the flow of the battle. 

This style of game is becoming very popular.  The League of Legends booth at PAX was one of the only booths that was completely packed from show open to show close.  It's also a very competitive genre.  Starcraft and Warcraft have always had competitive play but it's usually free for all and you don't really get the experience of individual interaction.  With these you get all that competition, plus you are the main character.

It'll be interesting to see how they do because this definitely is not an MMO. It may explain some of the hires earlier this year of non-MMO people.  The other thing is this style of game has a history of being F2P with alternate money making methods such as skins, boost, and customization.  I also believe LoL has cash tournaments with a buy in.
