I actually really like this video.  It sounds like one of the Ted talks that I've enjoyed.

I actually thought that part was brilliant.  For the people who really are great, that's absolutely accurate - and there are some great people that work in community management.  I'd actually count MajMal as one of them even though he doesn't have enough time in his day that he's able to devote to that aspect of his work.  Could you imagine the job that Memnir would do if he were hired as a community manager and then given the free reign to do the job right?

And then there are the people who aren't so great.  We all know who they are and for those people, we all know what he's really saying, so the "great people" is said with a wink and a nod on that side of the equation. You get to say what everyone knows you're saying without offending anyone and losing your message to defensive reactions.

According to this video, community management do no have a clear and distinct skill set and often leads to bad hires. I agree. And I agree without dismissing the fact that there are greater employees in this field.

From the outside, Sapience (Rick Heaton) over on the LOTRO side is awesome.

The good people probably know to get the hell away from/stay the hell away from DDO. I can't imagine working on DDO is great for your career and/or personal sanity.

Tolero is the person that is suppose to be translating what we want, back to the devs.  Now either she is being straight up ignored, or her translation is lacking.  Either way, not effective.  What excitement or events are brought to the game?
Why would Memnir a forum personality that use to post funny pics be a good community manager?  He would be no different than what we have, stop making him out to be some savior.  As long as he has the spotlight and feels special everything is super, otherwise all I see is whining.

Great thread! So true, and such a problem at Turdbine.

NWO may not have much to offer hard core gamers, but their community management approach is way better. In 3+ years of playing DDO I never once saw a staff member in game, and I've chatted with Sominator twice in the last month. I know others have played with DDO staff, but nobody I know personally has first hand experience. And they get their release notes out before the patch, and get status updates every 60-90 minutes during down time.

And the problem goes far beyond Tolero and Cordovan. Compare how Glin interacts with the forum to how Ryan Dancey (sp? too lazy to check), the CEO of Goblinworks, interacts with the community in Pathfinder Online. He's got a blog every 2 weeks where he shares his vision for the game, and he answers questions in a polite and thorough manner from fans and detractors alike. He's willing to change direction in the face of a compelling argument, and he is willing to provide reasoning for his decisions.

I imagine when you have such a huge backlog of terrible decisions it's hard to face the music and start talking with your community, but Glin really needs to put on his big boy pants and get Turdbine staff involved.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Jerry has joined a couple of my groups in the past, although it probably was before he polymorphed into Cordovan. He seemed nice enough, made a few decent jokes, and even contributed some kills. He didn't stick around past the first couple of quests though, as I don't think he enjoyed our zerging playstyle. Although I disagree with a lot of his moderation, he was cool in game.

I haven't checked out Pathfinder Online yet, but the guys who make the Hackmaster game are also very forthcoming with their information. You can ask questions on their forums and usually get a good response from Jolly Blackburn or one of the other top guys in a reasonably quick amount of time.

And I think that Jerry could be rescued if he had better direction from above and a healthier work environment.

I would be 100% okay with seeing Pay to Win in a Hackmaster MMORPG.  Smiley

I agree. But, I think she's out of touch to some extend. She said something like, "well Elite is not something that's soloable most of the time."

I was like... WUT?

Pretty sure she's a pretty casual player. So, she is semi-clueless on some stuff.

Problem is when her cluelessness affects her feedback to the devs.

A half-dozen boss Vaulties donated generously with real money to my classroom during a fundraiser in May 2015 to get poor kids books to read. I won't forget that. They know who they are, and they freaking rule.

Good grief Meat, you're hopeless. You would label the simple act of taking a shit as someone obeying the divine law of nature to leave a proof of existence.
