Yeah the name changes confused me a bit when I got 2nd Edition. 
I don't recall exactly when I learned about the chick tracts.  I think there was an article in dragon or some such magazine.
Not really sure where all the locals got their D&D hate from.  The 700 club show most likely.
In the mid 90s when we got a new catholic priest at our church (small town) he met a gaming friend of mine and tossed some holy water on him.
Then he said something along the lines of "oh, I guess D&D didn't make you a satanist, yet."  He was an awesome priest.
