Impressed that it's not as terrible on the PC as the last one.

Not impressed that it's still less reactive than DDO.  FFS, I hate console based games that get ported.  Feels like running and fighting in quicksand, or in a fat suit.  It's one thing to have deadly enemies, it's quite another to have ridiculous lag between pressing a key and getting an action to take place.

Still, pretty beautiful world once you apply the downsampling mods.

It's basically a game for masochists.  You need to die and reload about a million times before learning how to beat each fight.  Then laugh maniacally when people complain about EE being too hard.

Finally got through a long session with it.  Pretty fun, but I had to end up mapping the attack keys to my custom keyboard because the mouse attack lags too much to be useful at all.  Took a while to get a custom key setup I liked.

I'm going the pew pew pew route with a sorcerer.  Kiting is much tougher the DDO because there's so many place you can fall off and die so you have learn tricks on how to jump past the enemies and you can't run backwards effectively and fire at them.  I've figured how to beat some of the AI using the environment, but some just take out and out good twitch skills.  I'm not far in because I'm farming out the enemies until they stop spawning.  Working on this dude right now:

Having enemies jump at you with an axe as soon as you round the corner in some hallway, pretty amazing.  Plus a lot of them have 3 hit combos like DDOs Ogres, except for the fact that they're was nastier looking and not nearly as easy to avoid.

I think the death count pertains more to melee.  If you learn to stop, pop, and move, ranged isn't that bad.

Of course, death is around pretty much every corner in the game, so some of it is learning to expect that everywhere you can't see, something is probably waiting to kill you.

Sorc build is powerfull. Get the binoculars to snipe with your soul arrows. Beat the game twice (dex, sorc). I think str/faith build in now in order. Also hexs rock for a pure mage.

Nice.  Just got back to it after being out of town and the sorc build is starting to roll now.  I've not seen the binocs yet, but I'd say I'm probably not far into the game giving how I'm farming everything into non-existence.

I have Darksouls 1 on PC and found the controls very... bad X_X Brother has it on console and it is like a different game entirely, because there the controls work...

You say the controls are much better on PC for DS2 iliveyourdream13?

Controls way better.  Myself, I have total macro'd setup though.  Use keys for attacks though.  Mouse is really only good for mouselook and target lock/unlock.

Status update, I'm loving this game, and have about 80+ hours in my toon.  Puts the intense back into gaming.  Doing very well since I got the binocs, a must have for ranged combat on pc.  Mage build definitely hits it's sweet spot a bit further in when you start being able to score better spells.

Love the fact that no matter what you build, it's your play skills that will matter vastly more than your spreadsheet expertise.  You fuck up two dodges in a row to the same enemy, you're almost always toast.  I enjoy the ability of even the lowest enemies to pummel you quickly if you get caught in the wrong spot.

I've not touched pvp yet, but I want to finish one total run through NG before bothering with that.  Considering I farm out everything until it stops respawning (which doesn't really get tiring since stuff generally stop respawning after 10-15 times), I'm slowly getting to the end.

If there was ever an MMO that came out of this series, I'd totally drop DDO in a heartbeat for it.  I definitely suggest adding this to any PC game library.  Grin

Just started playing dark souls 1, god damn this is impossible on pc to play.
But I do like that it kills you in first 5 minutes of gameplay.  Grin
Took me 3-4 tries to kill the first boss, still getting used to gamepad, hate playing rpg/fps games on it.

That's cause you don't have the baby blanket of dodge %/displace/blurry/ac/etc.

You can execute a dodge or parry, but your timing better be down.  Theory builders need not apply.   Wink

Gamepad is why I avoided 1, but unnecessary for 2, as long as you bind everything critical to a keyboard and not a mouse, due to mouse lag.  There's also some mods for 2 that improve the PC graphics and swap out the gamepad icons for keyboard ones.

2 is a much more solid port.  But, 1 is toughter iirc due to a reduced number of bonfires.

Can you at least use mouse in 2 for mouse look?

I believe in 2 controls are much better.  1 was known to be a really bad port so I avoided it even when my console friends were raving about it.

I use mouse in 2 for mouselook and target lock.  Target lock is really invaluable, but you have to learn when to acquire and when to let go of the target since your positioning and movement change dramatically between having a target locked and not having one locked.  Also, because weapons have a "sweet spot" where damage is maxmized on the strike (way more complicated than DDO damage mechanics in terms of maxmizing a strike itself), not locking the target usually lowers your DPS because you can be "too close" to an enemy and lose damage on a strike.  When you're locked on, you're going to stay at the proper distance to hit with the sweet spot of the weapon you're holding (assuming you're close enough to hit).

Only time I use unlocked targeting on 2 is when using binoculars (you can't do both at the same time), then you have aim usuing your best judgement (no target crosshair - unless you paste one on your monitor/overlay).  It take a bit to get the hang of it, but once you do, it will become second nature.  Just much more active combat than DDO and way less cushy.

There's a really good wiki for DS2 as well.

I remember the first time I hung out on a ladder thinking the mobs wouldn't chase me only to turn around and see one had climbed up and proceeded to knife me to death in the back.  Cheesy

ETA:  Despite the active combat, it's not a platformer, so people who complain about DDO's sometimes Mario-like jumps won't find it there.  It much more like a pure fighting game, where you have to bait attacks, then counter, then bait some more.  You get greedy you die.  You get sloppy you die.

I've beaten about 3/4 of the bosses in 2 as well on NG.  Some of them I beat on the first pass through.  Most it took a couple deaths to get my attack plan to work, and a few took a lot of deaths to finally beat.  I've played a lot of the game in fully hollowed mode though, so -50% health, which means I can usually only survive 1 hit between healing, and sometimes not even that from some bosses.

I also love that to maximize farming drops, you pretty much have to run around in gear where you might as well be naked.  Farm at your own risk.  Grin

If you're going to get 2, make sure to get the GeDoSaTo Tool mod that allows you to run at a much higher resolution (whatever resolution your monitor supports) than the native game (the native game downsamples texture to a far lower resolution than is necessary for good systems).  It also allows you to swap in image files for the command keys to use instead of seeing the commands for gamepad listed on the screen (it unnerves me to no end that companies would think I'd want to use a gamepad to play a pc game, ever).

Its one of the best games I played.
Love the dodging and blocking mechanism.
Was reading a bit and saw you can get 100% block shield, I really need that.

One of the tricks you pick up is learning when to block, drop shield to recover stamina if needed, then block again.

Yea, figured that out already, stamina regenerates slower when Im blocking.
What I hate is when I swing my sword when Im near ledge, and I jump to my death. Cheesy

Ah, but when you bait enemies to fall off the same ledge, score!

The fall mechanics making fighting on narrow bridges/ledges/etc much more tense, but I find that a very good thing, even when I plummet to my death on occasion.
