But to provide context for my question.
I grew up in a Greek community in Oz and the Greeks I lived amongst and went to school with were some of the hardest working and supportive people I met. Sure they weren't Rhode scholars, but they welcomed me into their community, gave me an after school job and accepted me as one of the family.
Now this doesn't necessarily equate to the modern Greek citizen living in Greece.
I had heard from a Project manager who worked on the Olympics construction a completely different story about their work ethic (and working long hours doesn't equate to productivity either).
Hence why I asked Bacardi for some more info because what he was saying was inconsistent with what I had been told. Have never worked in Greece so I can't form a personal opinion.

The Greeks are just lovely people. Really hard working and very committed to their families as well.
They have not always made the best choices in their leaders during the last 30 years, but they are wonderful people and have a rich fantastic culture.
Greece was not a true "first world" country in the western sense when they joined the EU and that along with some pretty dozy leaders has made it challenging for the country at times. But before the 2008 meltdown Greece was doing very well in the 90's and early 2000's
I have visited three times, twice for extended stays and it is just heavenly.
Just as Drop said there is a sizable population of Greeks in Oz, many immigrated during the decades following WWII and helped build large infrastructure projects to provide water for the metropolitan regions. They are a important and successful portion of the Australian population, while still maintaining strong connections with the old home-country.
