Clarifications from Severance_pay

Quote:
We haven't really said much about either Legendary content, Mortal Fear, or Reaper Mode, as all of these things are for the future. You'll know more about Legendary and Mortal Fear as we get closer to Update 29. Reaper difficulty is further out; the "when" remains unclear at this point. We can say that Legendary and Reaper are two different things, however.

To summarize:

Legendary is CR 31+ content.
Mortal Fear is being looked at.
Reaper difficulty unfortunately snuck into some live and Lamannia text before it was ready; it'll be a while yet.

Translation - Legendary is another name for the content we have already kindly given you early, that is CR31+, we intend this to be end game.
Mortal fear will be nerfed in U29
Reaper difficulty will probably never happen, we're hoping you'll forget about it, so that we can deliver a bunch of new half-assed systems.

I'd be fine if they ditched Reaper difficulty in level 1-30 content.  The idea of Legendary content sounds better.  I prefer end game content that this challenging.  Like the old epics and Epic raids.  My favorite time period for this game was when eDQ, eVon6, eChrono, ToD, LoB, and MA were the end game with 12-20 6 man epic quests that were challenging.

Invest the effort of retooling 1-30 quests with a new difficulty into more end game content.

As for nerfing mortal fear, I'd be ok if they put a cap on the 50%.  Say 15k or 20k or something.  Or maybe have it do 25% damage in Legendary vs. 50%.  I'm sure there are options that could be thrown out that make it still very powerful and worth having given the expense it takes to get, but not make it OP.  Regardless, just making it not work at all is stupid and a poor design choice.

I want to believe it will be the last gasp before maintenance mode.

Agreed. I think this is the consensus of most people who have been playing at least since that time.

Yup, sounds sensible, but I suspect the position will be nerfing it 100% up until the last minute when there will be a "concession," e.g. what they always intending to do and they'll make it work like vorpal, 50% if they're under 1000 - 3000 HPs, otherwise deals +100 damage.

I enjoyed that time, too, and was just getting good at it (and had even managed to solo a few of the easier ones) when MotU dropped.

That model is fine, they just need to jack the numbers up for mortal fear.

I think turbine is only 3 people and a janitor (who also codes) at this point.  They don't have time to troll.

Maintenance mode would be a fucking blessing. Just imagine how awesome it would've been if they'd have stopped before almost any of the MOTU-era updates.

Eh, I like having new content to run, even if it isn't as good as a lot of the older stuff. If there had been no content since 2012, the game would be actually dead by now, as opposed to effectively dead as it is at the moment ;P

It's down to taste isn't it. After MotU I bought the next few updates, played them all once then left them to rot. Taught me a lesson and I've not bought any since. I'd rather play nothing than some painful, eye-bleeding room-to-room HP sack grindy borefest.

There has been some post MoTU content that I enjoy.  I like High Road, eGH, HH, ToEE, Thunderholme, eOrchard, for example.  I not a fan of Wheelon, Stormhorns or Druid's Curse.  I'm meh on new Amrath, Gatekeepers, and the small stuff like Study in Sable and Mask of Deception.

Of course, if you back out the recycled content of eGH and eOrchard, that doesn't leave a lot of victories in there.

Study in Sable

Have to say I actually enjoyed this quest the first few times I did it. Required some actual thinking besides just the standard "Go there - Kill X of Y - Rinse - Repeat" if you did it without a guide.

Yes it was a bit unfair and sweeping I guess. You're right, neither eGH or eOrchard I remember buying so either didn't need to or felt the content was good enough. A few outside of those seemed ok from what I played on Lama (or saw on youtube) but not enough to get new TP and get them. It's a shame as the content used to be as good a thing to entice people with as the character creation and neither, imo, are what they were.

Not that I expect a game to be exactly what I want for all 9 years of its life, just a shame where it's been of late.

Yeah, DDO updates feel like a night at the casino - I keep thinking I just won a little so maybe my luck has turned around, but pretty much always wishing I'd left an hour ago because I'm now behind what I had then.  Undecided

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Well Maintenance mode is going to happen a bit of time after they have put Sentient Weapons in game...
Though since it has been put in backburners ( or merged with Epic Greensteel ) we won't see it happen a short time after U29.
I'm going to give them 3 updates after U29 before annoucing Maintenance Mode at best.

Without having any idea what the revenue the game looks like, Maintenance mode predictions tend reveal more about the person making the prediction than the actual state of the game.  People who are upset with the game or feeling jaded tend to see the glass half empty.  People who are enjoying the game tend to see the glass half full.

You've got a point. I still play Rogue every now & then, HOMM 1 & 2, and Civ2. I guess I prefer my games dead.

This.

I never enjoyed DDO as much as that magical time before MotU.

I had many happy memories of Epic runs through Sentinels, the deep satisfaction of assembling a Shard-Seal-Scroll item (even if it was Tenplar's Bulwark) and the wondrous non-caring about XP or BB because you were already at cap, and everyone was in the same boat.

Shroud runs every ten minutes (just swap to an alt and run it again!) and MA/ LoB runs that weren't ridiculously short-manned.

People actually ran ToD sometimes, with a full raid party.

Epic VoN wasn't a Milk Run. eADQ required more than 3 people to complete. One token per quest per day kept people cycling through the content, without it being a pointless grind. It honestly seemed faster TRing then than after the whole "token fragment drop" nonsense they implemented later.

Seems almost like a Tale of Innocence Lost, really...  Undecided
