Ravenloft, eye of the beholder, those games are great.

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

IDK. It may be because it is already free.

There are abandonware sites that provide free download:

I played a Forgotten Realms set and the Champions of Krynn set, but that was before windows.

I had tried to play the Krynn set several years later, little trip down memory lane, but was unable to transfer characters between the first and second story.  This was with windows but before DOS Box.

Will DOS Box enable me to transfer characters from the first story to the next like I could do from Pool of Radiance to Hillsfar, then the third in that line?

You usually just run the dox box and it can ready the game file.

Just download the GOG version and then you just need to instsall via the .exe and click on the shortcut icon on your desktop, no need to fuck around with dosbox at all other than choosing cga, ega or vga which sound option and if you will use mouse or not.

Also according to gog info you can transfer characters from one to the other atleast in the beholder series, didn't check further.

I used to play this a lot on my Amiga in the early 90's. I still have doubts that I full explored all areas of that dungeon. I've yet to find a comprehensive FAQ written on it. It was too easy to beat once one learned the shortest path to the dragon.

For those looking to emulate Gold Box games, I think the best graphics were on Amiga, so check out WinUAE.

Actually saw that bundle and thought it sounded fun Cheesy Was going to buy it for myself, but family always complains that I never want anything for Christmas... so, instead of buying it for myself, put it on my Christmas wishlist.  Now I just need to wait and see if someone bought it. Only some of the games I've heard of before, so will be new and fun to play. Also... Heroes of the Lance? Never heard of that one either. Recommend I try it out if I like the old style DND games? And TOEE... Checked out GOG today and saw that it is only $5 or so. Recommend me grabbing that one?  I've played DND Eye of the Beholder, Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and a few other DND games and they were fun; and I love the Baulders Gate (both series) and Icewind Dale series. Also got that new game, Pillars of Eternity. Like these types of games. Is TOEE and Knights like those?

Oh fuck you Silky for making this thread.

I've installed an Amiga emulator, been running Pools of Darkness and am trying to formulate an optimal party.

So far I'm considering 3 teams of Fighter 15/Cleric 16+ and Fighter 15/Magic-User 16+ pairs.

It's going to be a pain in the arse to level them though.

I just rediscovered a few things about the Amiga version of PoD. There's a place near the start of the game where one can farm 75k+ XP every 10 seconds or so with a town adjacent. That means being able to create the ideal party from the very beginning.

Dual-classed Fighter/Magic-Users can cast with Longsword, Shield and Helm readied, but not plate. Dual-classed Fighter/Clerics can use a Longsword, which is the best weapon in the game (Vorpal version for chance of insta-kill per hit).

Dual-classed Fighter/Magic-Users and Fighter/Clerics only get their 2 attacks per round with Longswords or no weapon readied, but not with with Hammers. I haven't tested other one-handed weapons yet, but IIRC the Quarterstaff may be the only bludgeoning weapon that grants 2 attacks per round.

Every time I get nostalgic and think those old games would be fun to play again, I remember all the graph I used up mapping everything.   I can't go back.
