Quarterstaff builds - whats the secret?
Sep 12th, 2016 at 3:45pm

I have never managed to do a quarterstaff build yet, and I'd like to do one next. Is there any specific trick to it, or just "a bunch of rogue levels and some feats"?

I am looking to, if possible, earn a fvs past life feat. I was thinking of trying 11 fvs/7 rogue/2 fighter, or something to that effect(fighter for the extra feats). If feats aren't as important I could do Bladeforged Paladin with 3 paladin/9fhz/8 whatever(probably rogue). I have no idea how viable any of these splits are. I just recall that quarterstaff builds were all the rage a while back, and I am nothing if not well behind the leading edge.

40% (or more) Doublestrike helps a bunch. Attack speed increases also help.

Start with 4 BF pali for reconstruct, bf immunities, pali immunities, dg, and the most important ability of them all, item defense, because you will be beating billion hp mobs with wooden sticks.

Add a half dozen rogue for QS use.

Go wild with last 10 levels.

What does that 4th paladin level get you?

With BF Reconstruct, the only purpose of the fvs levels is for the past life.

I could do 4 Paladin/7 rogue(7 over 6 gets 4d6)/ and 9 fvs. Play with a lot of deception/double-strike.

Yeah, that sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

The secret is they have been a flavor build since Sireth stopped being an endgame weapon.

Forcing Fvs into the mix sounds like a square peg. I'm sure you can get to 20, but that's not saying much. Might as well splash some Monk if you're not going pure Rogue though.

Shoot for 36 in TA, 25 in Assassin, 13 in NS, 6 in Shintao

What 5FS said...

If you must have the FVS icon I would go 12 FVS, 5 rog, 3 fighter or paladin.  It'll get you to 20, but not quickly.

Best stick builds will be 20 rogue or 18 rogue/2 monk.

Bladeforged 11 rogue 6 monk 3 paladin and 12 rogue 5 wizard 3 paladin work well too.

What was it that made Sireth so good? I am genuinely curious.

Unfortunately I haven't got one and won't be getting one before I hit 23 on that life, so it is somewhat moot. I just know I was seeing those quite a bit.

Ok, so my Bladeforged 4 Paladin/7 Rogue/9 FVS is not looking terribly viable. Is it just not possible to shoe-horn FVS into this? I'd really like to do a quarterstaff build but if I can't make it work this life I guess it will have to wait.

What if I did Shadarkair 9 rogue/11 fvs?

I'm not doing a heroic build. I've had my fill of those.

That's not sarcasm, I'm trying to figure this out. What can I do with druid?

Crit range 16-20 base, plus solid base damage (for the time, anyway.)  The Planar Focus set was decent once, too.

Shillalegh spell, only good if you have wooden staves.

Also Ram's Might.

Wicked (at the time) damage and crit profile.

push bottom double-strike 30%, and fatal harrier. And Shillelagh for many staves.

Sireth still has that crit range as far as I can tell, why is that not good anymore?

Enchants your wooden melee weapons to do additional base weapon damage, and converts their damage type to bludgeoning. Weapons with this enchantment deal an additional 0.5[W] damage. Quarterstaves with this enchantment deal an additional 1.0[W] damage. A weapon can only have one item enhancement at a time.

Seems like it would be very nice. For 2 or 3 druid levels might well be worth it.

Maybe

Shadar Kai 9 Rogue/10 Fvs/1 Druid? I feel like that may not suck.

TF came out and trumped all of the abnormal crit named weapons. For sticks this puts you back at base 20x2 (18-20x3 with IC and T5 TA) which just isn't good enough when the standard for other builds is at least 15-20x3 or better.

Also Shillelagh doesn't work with TF or LGS.

Is nice, but like 5fs said, eclipsed by current "must-have" weaponry.

I would really recommend trying out a stick build without the FvS first time around, the TA abilities take some getting used to.

My TA is stuck on a Rog/Pal/Rgr split, trying to make use of Exposing Strike from DWS core III, and Sacred Defense and not having enough AP to be really playable.  Beware!

2 Rogue 6 Fighter 12 FVS will get it done for you.

Get the Qstaff attack speed out of Acrobat (4 pts).  Tier 5 in Kensai with staff (31 pts).  6 pts in Stalwart Defender.  Go strength based and get Divine Might from WarPriest (4 pts).  For a total of 45 pts.  Put the rest in whatever.

That could do the job. Thinking Shadar Kai or PDK for the base? (not doing heroics again, ugh)

I could also do bladeforged with a hat-trick(1 paladin/6 fighter/8 fvs, +1heart into 1 rogue, take 16 as the second rogue), but with 12 levels of fvs, reconstruct looses a bit of it's luster. On the flip side, I don't enjoy being level-drained.

AM leaning towards shadar kai, its the one iconic i've never been.

I ended up going with 6 fighter, 5 rogue, 9 fvs, Bladeforged(using a +1 heart to get out of paladin. Currently only lvl 15(1 rogue/6 fighter/8 fvs) and have not actually had a chance to play yet, had to do a quick druid life, then of course theres all the post TR gearing.

I don't have a problem, I can stop any time I want!!

...to go back to being level-drained constantly. Tongue Even with Restoration on my recently completed cleric life I think I spent too damn much time neg-leveled. Especially in the higher-end epics, those dudes will hit you for 4 neg levels at a go! I need a break from it. I'll do BF this life and next, next will be a super long life, maybe by then I'll have forgotten about level drain Tongue

Anyway, regarding my BF stick-smacker build, its ended up being not too shaby so far. I wouldn't really recomend it as a "build" because the 9 fvs levels aren't doing jack shit besides providing a favs PL. DPS is entertaining, seeing lots of 1100-pt crits(at lvl 15). It may not be top-tier but its better than terrible. I  am doing well with sneak attack, using a RADII quarterstaff and Guidance of Shar(bot prock blindness effects, sometimes even on my enemies!) which creates good Sneak Attack damage. I imagine I will suck for a bit in early epics but I should at least be survivable.

Question: does the feat Heavy Armor Combatant work on Bladeforged? I took Adamantine Body so my docent counts as heavy armor, but I am not seeing the six PRR when i equip it.
