Doesn't that require dual wielding to get deflect arrows every 2 seconds? I tried it on my shuri and never got to see deflect trigger less than 6 seconds.

I don't think naming names would be a good thing for me to do, but I'd pretty much add anyone who's a know-it-all dick on the list. Even if they are sometimes intelligent with their opinions, the way they state them in long, "i'm a lawyer at trial"-type posts makes me want to punch them in the face. They act like whiney babies with god complexes and then freak out if someone so much as breathes criticism in their direction.

Used to work. Did they change it with the tempest nerf?

Looks good...

Does Improved Weapon Finesse require Weapon Finesse to work? I was always foggy on that point...

According to the Wiki:

Improved Defense: Your Shield of Whirling Steel Grants +1/2/3 additional Armor Class, Physical Resistance, and Magical Resistance. If you possess Deflect Arrows it can trigger once every 4/3/2 seconds.

Shield of Whirling Steel: While you are dual wielding weapons, you gain a +2 Shield bonus to Armor Class, Physical Resistance Rating, and Magical Resistance Rating. This increases by +1 for each additional Tempest Core Ability you acquire.

So this may not actually work... I guess somebody will need to test this live and find out for sure.

It's somewhat easy to test if you're setup to record gameplay video.

Step into an archer heavy mission (ToEE, Slave Lords, Chains of Flame, etc.), kill all the melee mobs then just stand there while archers shoot at you for a bit.

Then play back the video in slow motion, nothing the timestamps on the deflections.  If you get deflections more than once every 6s, it works.

um, or just go in and count. if you can't count the diff between 6 seconds and 2 seconds you have problems

Um, sure.

Getting the timing precise will be lots of fun when you're being spammed with arrows and all the miss, dodge, incorporeal, concealment messages are queuing the text up and scrolling everything.

Yes, you could take all that gear off, but then you won't be able to take nearly as many hits to test it.

Gear: 14-20x4 Light Mace, 14-20x5 Skullsmasher, 12-20x4 Drow Light Mace

This is the only other problem I'm seeing here.

By my count, here are the weapons this works with:

Skartongue's Ladel
Mournlode Light Maces (various levels)
Adoryn's Malice
Skullsmasher
Green Steel Light Mace
ToEE Light Mace (and epic variants)
Drow Light Mace
Alchemical Light Mace
Cormyrean Light Mace
Thunderforged Light Mace
Legendary Green Steel Light Mace

That's a very short list, even for 15-30.

Drow weapons are now rare AF since nobody farms House of Rusted Blades anymore. Adoryn's Malice is great, but who the fuck has run Restless Isles or the titans raid in the last Year(s)? Alchemical is almost as rare as Titan Raids since the devs apparently forgot Alchemical Crafting exists and hasn't been updated or even had the drop rates improved to get people back in those quests. Cormyrean is a crap shoot... So that really leaves Green Steel and Thunderforged as the go-to weapons.

I realize that this is theorycraft based on the numbers, and I'm a big fan of Skullsmaher and Mournlode from my old Swash builds... but that's a really narrow window to hit without some serious grind.

</rant>

I will likely use this build in future since I want the Aasimar Scourge PLs for my main, and I already have Ranger PLs.  Grin

Named support for light mace is light, that's fair. Since it has to be iconic 1-14 isn't a problem though. Skullsmasher is the best of the bunch crit-wise and the drop rate on it is really high. Also Mournlode is an easy short farm for t1, and t2 TF you can just buy mats for on the cheap. So I would focus on those.

Of course, nothing is preventing you from kicking ass with any other keen swash weapon in a pinch: Balizarde, Agony, Letter Opener, Razorend, Tiefling Assassin Blade, Sky Pirate's Dagger, etc.

Drop Sap, push GSW to 15 and take Imp Crit Piercing at 12?  Or better yet, take Imp Crit Piercing at 9 and Imp Crit Bludgeoning at 12 since there are better named daggers until 14ish.

That would let you freely swap between light maces and daggers and shortswords as needed and you could always put Sap back in once you cap with a feat swap.

Finally got around to testing it properly.

Fresh iconic, leveled to 2 bard/1 ranger, no gear except weapon. Went in KA, up to the perch, tested Deflect Arrows with both SWF and THF. (Scourge animations for THF are pretty cool BTW.) Without Improved Defense, DA went 6 secs min between procs. With Imp Def and either long sword or a great sword equipped, it indeed went down to 2 secs.

Note this is with DA from swash. I also remember it working properly with the feat as a monk. Presumably, the version of DA you can get in Tempest actually requires you to have 2 weapons, since it says it requires you to have two weapons. It's possible that if you have it from the Tempest cores and also from another source that the 2w requirement will take precedence and screw you over. Maybe that's where the confusion is coming from?
