Holy shit @ 683k downvotes for EA's comments.

TLDR:

1. The gaming industry has moved to a subscription (microtransaction) model.  It's no different than other industries.  Look at Microsoft who now sells 1 year subscriptions to Office.

2. Communities have power when the vendor listens.

I found this fascinating:

"Although the industry’s self-regulating Entertainment Software Rating Board requires companies to disclose the presence of “digital purchases” in games, it doesn’t consider loot boxes to be a form of gambling because the loot-box buyer is guaranteed to receive something inside (even if it’s something no one wants).

Nor are companies in the United States required to reveal details about the underlying odds that dictate loot drops, although they are obligated to do so in China as a result of rules put in place by the Ministry of Culture that went into effect this past spring."

So China is ahead on this.

Likely because if there's a way to swindle a bitch, the Chinese will find it and do it to 20,000,000 people before dawn the next morning.  Grin

I found it particularly interesting that loot drop rate disclosure was a rule created by the Ministry of Culture in China.

Is "rule" interchangeable with "law" in China?

Everything in China is an arm of the Party and omnipotent Politburo...

If they say it, it's the Word of God.

And Thy Will Be Done, lest ye invoke the displeasure of the party.

I think their ministry of Culture (which are basically synonymous with our cabinet level offices: Department of Justice, Department of Commerce, etc) are all also under the executive branch but have wider leeway than the U.S. gives the executive branch to create executive orders on their own without actual legislation.

I think this particular law would only apply to things like the collectibles crates.  Where you buy something for ddo points and get a randomized set of rewards.

The drop rate for eSoS wouldn't be relevant because that is not something you can purchase.  If they made an epic shards crate that you could buy for 495 ddo points that contained a random shard (which could be the esos shard, among other things) then they would need to disclose the probabilities.

Actually, you can purchase explanations.  Information can be bought.

However, sadly for you, common sense is not something you can purchase.

DDO's collectibles crates were actually ok. I opened up a lot of them(about 40) and got a reasonable assortment of items. Even better was the rare collectibles thing that just straight up let you pick, no randomass punkness to it.

I would never play a game with loot boxes. Fuck that shit so hard.

There's micro transactions and micro transactions... ( and loot boxes and loot boxes )

reddit and The Net is just on rampage over the Battlefront thing where EA behaved... well like EA. ( basically as a money grabber compan with no morals as long as it gets money to feed the bottom line )

Honestly the DDO view on things is not that bad. You can play the game without any micro transaction, there's no real pay to win ( you'll get there eventually even not paying. )
The boxes ( or bags or whatever ) we get from the Store are fixed in their content so we all know before hand what we will get.

As a reminder : the Battlefront shenanigan that started it all, as I understood it is : you have to pay for boxes of random loot that contains some stuff that is high end gear that cannot be found elsewhere in the game. Said high end gear being way more powerful than anything that can be found in game.

Not just that though. Most other games with loot boxes, are purely cosmetic in nature. Stormfronts on the other hand, offered things used to upgrade your gear, which for a normal, non-spending player, would take an average of 8 in-game hours played, to upgrade a single item, once. A fat ass, no life, with mommies credit card, could instead buy loot boxes, to obtain already upgraded, beyond what was currently even available to non-spenders, items. That was the primary issue going into this. That, and the fact that you had to buy the game first, and then if you wished to have any chance towards competitiveness, drop even more money on loot boxes, as if buying the game wasnt enough already. Now, had they released the game F2P, with the Loot Crates, there would have been bitching, but not nearly on the scale that it is currently.

Hey, you buy Astral Shards for real world currency, and you spend astral shards to re-roll a chest, so there is a direct real money to drop rate chain and you can precisely calculate the cost of each attempt. It doesn't apply to things that only drop in treasure bags or a percent drop on an enemy kill since you can't directly buy kills, but anything in a chest with a "re-roll" button has a specific cost. Thoughts?
