The other 90% of exploiters are just regular players who are guildies and friends or friends of firends (on down the line) of the innovative exploiters.   This segment you could absolutely diminish with a zero tolerance policy.   A 7 day ban with no lost benefit from from the exploit isn't enough to change behavior.   Half and quarter measures don't work.

You would suck at the Stanford Prison Experiment ...

Since bugs will occur (fact) you need a behavior management policy in place to alter the risk/reward decision making.  To act as a deterrent.

because positive reinforcement is more effective.

You should at least post on the motherboards telling the community about it.

How will they ever know if no one tells?

I disagree.   I think 10% of exploiters are players who are basically game hackers.  Hackers hack because of the challenge of the hack.  They climb the mountain because it is there.  They are probably looking for exploits in multiple games at a time.  And any game they play, they look for exploits.  The fun for them is finding the unintended consequences in the code and figuring out how to maximize them.

This is the segment that will exploit/hack no matter what the consequences.  Because the benefit/reward is in finding the exploit.  Not in actually gaining benefit from it.  (Besides the validation and epeen that comes from sharing it).  This is the segment that you can only eliminate with better programming, version control, etc.

I agree with all that, except I'd put the number more like 1%, if that.  Finding bugs isn't always simple, but in any complicated system, they're around.  The tricky part can be replicating them, and that's a million times easier when you know (generally) how code works.  Or how the last one worked.   Grin  They almost all leak though - validation like you say is always big.  It's probably 1% of *those* who don't need to share shit.

Asheras wrote on Mar 2nd, 2018 at 10:18am:
Bugs aren't bad coding.   There are two kinds of programmers:  The kind that know their code has bugs and plan for handling it and the kind that don't know their code has bugs and are shocked and caught off guard and let it become worse than it needs to be.  (There is no 3rd kind of programmer that creates bug free code.  Any programmer who says otherwise is a liar or a fool.  Or both. )

That's a little oversimplified as I'm sure you know, and corrected in the post after yours...  there are plenty of kinds of programmers, but the worst kind is those who don't learn from their mistakes.  95% of the (exploit) bugs in this game are of the same variety.  That's what's hilarious from our position as Public QA, and intensely frustrating from a coder's perspective.  They do the same shit over and over, and it burns them every single time.

In terms of ban... you leave out the ones who are just sick of this shit and don't care anymore. They are the ones that started 12 years ago, have a family and only play the game because they have invested so much time in it. They play for that one good and fun run they get over a weekend of dissapointment. They are probably the ones carrying you through 95% of content. They are the ones running r10 while you cry like a little bitch on the main forums about how reaper is fail.

And for the most part, they are fucking estatic that they have been perm banned, they don't have to put up with your mediocre bullshit anymore.

I don't think it took any special tools to figure this one out.  It was on this board for a few days and we know SSG is lurking.  Its also not that hard to figure out who was doing it; snitches are snitches and it's not too hard to find the guy in 3BC jumping up and down and running from the saga guy to the tavern repeatedly.

I don't think they found out about the exploit with their alleged "tools", but I do think many (if not all) of the people banned were banned by some detective work on their end (as opposed to being reported).

Using myself as an example, I sent a bot account to look around in 3bc. Nobody was there. One of my characters (who was within the bb level range of 3bc) spoke to the saga guy and walked away once, then teleported out. Even if there had been someone standing there watching (which there wasn't, unless there was an invisible GM which I find extremely unlikely), I didn't look suspicious.

Other people are claiming they got banned when they haven't done it for months, which was before this exploit went public and certainly before any snitches would've been watching.

Maybe they're able to track sagas being turned in in areas where they shouldn't be, maybe any actions taken in "limbo" were flagged, or maybe it's something else entirely.

Whatever their methods may have been, it seems logical to assume that the bans were based on more than snitching.

You just used "logical" in a sentence about actions taken by SSG.

Amen.

That's what finally got me to quite WoW. I realized I was logging on and playing obsessively for hours a day, when I hated the game and had no way to advance my character. Was only playing because I was paying the $15/month sub. It was a solid decade before I convinced myself paying a subscription for a game was OK again.

Here you go, found some links for suing gaming companies!

https://www.justanswer.com/consumer-protection-law/7oko0-sue-game-company-wrongf...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDEvKg0RdhQ

All the other stuff I read suggests that suits against gaming companies won't win unless they violated their own terms of service.

As with any lawsuit in america, it largely depends how good your lawyers are.

What kind of damages can someone realistically expect to recoup though?

Not a whole lot based soley on having some ottos boxes on the deleted character or something to that effect, but you could reasonably make the case that deleting a character you've invested 10 years in caused you "emotional damage" - which a good lawyer could make. That could be worth a fortune.

There is also the argument being made that SSG set up a "honyepot" and that could also be serious.

If the class-action suit gets off the ground, SSG could be forced to pay back attorney's fees as well as reimburse anyone who had their account deleted. That could get even bigger if someone can make the "emotional damage" claim.

Market value of the toon, plus the value of any easily definable items in the inventory like Otto's boxes, etc.

Seems like a waste of time then. Unless the person really is emotionally damaged . . . then all the best!

Re: ban. I bet SSG is thinking "if we get rid of these guys, no more people will be exploiting!" They probably see this as their chance to get the Vault out of DDO. Seems like an ego thing to me. Those never go well, can't see this as anything other than bad for business, for the lack of professionalism being displayed.

So $0.   You don't own the toon.  Nor do you own any inventory items.  You were just paying for access to them for a limited duration.
