I saw this bit today on youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms_mVOw927I

Its being done by the studio responsible for Warframe appearantly as a full F2P game. Will this fully kill LOTRO and what will SSG do about this.

Looks like it might get interesting.

Pretty sure Athlon games isn't the studio that did Warframe.

Digital Extreme aka DE made warframe and was a Canadian studio for hire that made Dark Sector and helped Epic on the Unreal games. DE was bought out by a Chinese company that also happens to own Athlon games.

The Chinese company is called Leyou Technology Holdings.

Athlon Games Partners with Middle-earth Enterprises
to Publish Multi-Year Online Game Based on The Lord of the Rings™

Athlon Will Apply Its Live Services Expertise & Top Western Development to Create An Engrossing New AAA Experience for One of the World’s Most Powerful IPs

LOS ANGELES — Sept. 4, 2018 — Today, Athlon Games, a global publisher of console and PC games, announced it has signed a long-term licensing agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish a video game based on The Lord of the Rings. Athlon Games is working with a partner developer to create an online game set in the world of Middle-earth™ at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.

“It’s a singular opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the landmark fantasy work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we are excited about the resurgence of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP,” said Dave Miller, president, Athlon Games. “This, along with several other major properties Athlon is working with, will help us to further our goal of creating AAA cooperative console and PC experiences that gamers will want to play for years to come.”

“We are extremely pleased to work with Athlon Games to create a new, immersive game experience, exploring epic regions in Middle-earth during the years leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings,” said Fredrica Drotos, Chief Brand & Licensing Officer at Middle-earth Enterprises. “Athlon’s game will allow millions of Middle-earth fans throughout the world a unique opportunity for fellowship and epic exploration.”

Athlon Games, and its parent company Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited, which also owns Digital Extremes and Splash Damage, is marrying its deep expertise with free-to-play game design and service with Western development and strong IP to create top quality console and PC games that have global appeal.

“We believe in Athlon Games’ model to collaborate closely with Western developers to implement incredibly successful live services, while also giving its partners the autonomy they need to develop outstanding game experiences,” said Alex Xu, CEO of Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited. “At Leyou, we’ve seen great success implementing this strategy with other titles, such as Warframe. Now we can expand our footprint in the West with Athlon Games.”

Los Angeles-based Athlon Games is a newly formed publisher headed up by industry veteran Dave Miller, formerly of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Codemasters and NBC Universal. For more on Athlon Games, visit www.athlongames.com.

DE, is right here in London, Ontario.

I'm biased, but I'd say they are decent if not above average for a studio/imo.

WTF is with London's growing tech sector, right near the toxic waste part of town?  I need like three more years of reasonable housing costs before the tech kids Bay-Area me out of home ownership.

stumbled here...

Just watched part of the video : the guy got it worng.

Tolkien Enterprise ( aka Middle Earth Enterprise ) Does not own the IP for anything in Middle Earth beyond The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
And unless a deal was cut with The Tolkien Estate ( read : Christopher Tolkien and his family ) there's no way anything beyond characters, places and events described in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings can be used. ( and you can expect Chris to fight tooth and nails over that, if he could he'd find a way to get back tha two IP his father sold and tuck them back into the whole rest. )

So at best this new game will take place a few years before the events from The Hobbit, but it definitely cannot be set up in First Age or in Second Age.
At the same time it also cannot be set before the fall of Arthedain since the event is not described in LoTR or the Hobbit. ( just mentioned in passing )

The guy got nothing wrong.  Did you read my previous post, at all?  The guy in the video is basing his statements off of what Leyou Tech Holding is saying.

Quote:

Just saying.  I guess it could all be lies but if it is it's coming right from the top and I would imagine leyou and middle earth enterprises know better than you or I what they are allowed to do with the IP they own  etc.

Also here in Canada I do believe Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit enters public domain in 2024 since copyright laws here is year of death +50 years for such things.
