Tiefling Preview on Lammania

So here's the preliminary showing.

Missing some emotes and the dances, but the guts of it are all there, including the racial trees.

Tails are IN, but optional. They look great. Horns are 5e, with a few token options for the "Small Horn" fans (I prefer small for females and the large on the males).

Confirmed Iconic Bard, in case anyone still didn't know.

Looks pretty good, figuratively and literally. Looks like we'll have some swank new Swash outfits coming down the pipe as well.

Also: +1 Dev Rep for the fiddle.  Grin

Is the body basically in the human/aasimar/half-elf mold?

I'm surprised no one is commenting on lamania about the horns.

I'm not a fan of the horns using your skin tone for coloration. I hope that's temporary. Or at the very least they might add one 'bone' colored set of horns for each cluster option (look through them, there's about 2-3 in a style.)

It's especially bad if you pick a normal fleshy skin tone. The red and black/grey options are less horrible. But still wish they'd change that before release.

Edit: Forgot the tails business. I'm not a fan of them not having an option for no tails. At the very least give us an option for a cut/torn tail to match the damaged horns. And I wish there was one set of damaged horns in the 'normal' style. I'm more of a fan of 3.5e tieflings than the 5e draenei from Warcraft knock offs.

As far as the enhancements go; I'm loving the regular tiefling. The iconic is lackluster in comparison to me atleast. Like I love the fiddle idea; it's a nice cheesy bit. It's more that I find the SLA to be kind of awful. And the fact that the iconic adds sonic based damage opposed to the fire version of the regular, but then has the conflicting theme issue of the rest of the abilities being fire based without fire resist stripping like the regular tiefling.

I wish they'd commit to a sonic based iconic and a fire based regular tiefling. The mixed elements on the iconic make it really bad imo. And I'm someone who loves to play sonic caster bard even if it's not as strong as say a fire savant.

Tails are NOT optional.

I went through character creation of both the regular tiefling and the iconic and neither had a no tail option.

Racial tree will be nerf'ed to hell once they've sold enough Sharn pre-orders...

If anyone wants to play devils advocate for me with one of your spare mobo accounts:

Suggest that if they want to force tails; they should give both tieflings a T4 enhancement that makes the tail slightly prehensile and holds say a dagger (since we have this brand new crossbow mirroring tech) and deals -glancing blows-.

It's low damage, mirrors the effects of your mainhand weapon, but it's a nice little boost/idea. Kudos if they let the THF feats increase the glancing blow damage on the tail attack. They wouldn't need to animate it swiping around in my opinion, just the animation of it curled around a dagger.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about that either... But they weren't all completely awful. I would gladly lose the jewelry On/Off in favour of horn colour control.

I was actually more disappointed in the fact that there was no "Normal Eyes" option like Aasimar. That seemed lame, considering how limited the eyes options were scrolling through... just some tweaks to the shape and that's it.

I missed the Tails-Always-ON thing. Dude's face was in the way of the character creation screen and I couldn't get past it (took me forever to figure out Tiefling is +2 CHA).

Also #sadface for not recycling succubus animations for the female Tieflings. That was a missed opportunity.

Agreed. Although it now makes me sad that Aasimar didn't get a harp.

Yeah, they could have easily gone Full Retard on Sonic and still kept the T4 option to swap to Fire if you preferred. Or the whole "Use your Fire Spellpower instead of Sonic if it is Higher" gimmick they introduced. That would have saved a lot of gearing/speccing woes. Although I think that they have this tree basically designed to suit Swashbuckler, I don't think they even consider the other Bard enhancements as anything but "support trees".

Aasimar is still as it was at launch so I doubt much will change, for good or ill.

I think this is Blue Sky Dreaming. They likely figure the on-attack fire damage below X% is the bonus damage.

Best case, they'd just add "Prehensile Tail- +1/2/3% Doublestrike" and that is like, 99.99999% not happening at this point.

While you're definitely not wrong. I find that the Arpeggio isn't very swashbuckler friendly. After all it has a forced animation, which stands in the way of beating down.

Additionally, the fascinate on hit ability was stated by Coco to use the Spellsinger cores for adding additional fascinate types in.

I think the tree is a really ass-backwards swash compatible deal.

Look at the regular tiefling. There are plenty of classes and builds it can mesh with; both caster and melee.

Now look at the iconic; who the hell is the audience other than folks that run the game on normal?

It's bad for a melee racial as it lacks the +% style attack bonuses of elves. The sonic damage is laughable. Even if you went full retard and used the SB option for orbs and used the traditionalist caster bit. You'd still lack enough sonic on hit to be worthwhile including taking Scion of Feywild.

As a caster option it's still pretty weak. That's mostly because it hinges entirely on the Arpeggio without having utility spells/abilities. The Scorch SLA in normal tiefling has the benefit of being both a decent SLA as well as adding vulnerability/stripping fire immunity.

Arpeggio deals fire and sonic damage. The tree lacks any sort of vulnerability or immunity stripping.

Really in my opinion; I think that the truest way to make the iconic better would be to give them multi-selectors with the options from the regular tiefling.

On the flip side the regular tiefling should get the multi-selector for the Darkness ability line. Bonus points if they also get the Charm Hearts as an option; perhaps a fourth multisector under Infernal Sovereign. Because fucking Succubi parentage.

In the shitter until they can bother Sev into diving into the core code and making psionics a thing.

But we all know he's going to throw the githanki in before he does the kalashtars.
