I get the criticism that it doesn't go far enough yet to invalidate the Sharn sets and that is limiting. But the fact that we can get two or three sets active at once (one being a sharn set) is still a step forward.
If they reworked the sets and the ordering and got rid of the fluff then the current structure would be fine. But, for some reason, they want a 7 piece set to have 2 or 3 bonuses that just aren't that compelling for the cost. The sharn Family set, for example, gives 4 set bonuses which are all amazing, for 3 items. That is strong density. When you have effects that are, basically, a tax because almost nobody cares about them and would prefer something else, and your density is N-1 effects instead of N+1 (where N is the number of items to complete the set) you really need every set bonus to ROCK. You can't have marginal effects or flavor effects. This isn't the place for that. Do that with the new one off Soul forged Augments and such.
I think you misunderstood me. I don't want to invalidate Sharn, quite the opposite.
The issue is Feywild is DoA in most cases because the Sharn sets still exist and are so powerful/dense as you said. The problem is the flexibility falls apart because unlike Sharn it doesn't really address the issues of gear tetris.
If anything it makes it worse. With Sharn we had the ability to craft stats onto gear. This time around we're stuck with set in stone pieces without any sort of flexibility on them.
Personally; I'd love to fuck around with the Prince's Gauntlets for instance. But am I going to replace Hammerfist? Hell fucking no. I'm not about to try and perform the literal build suicide of adhering to Feywild gear tetris and create several shortcomings in my gearing just to get back to almost having Sharn's bonuses.
That clearly mentally deficient person of the mobo lain5246 is also missing the point. I'm all for letting hybrids and non-traditional or straight benefiting form Sharn set builds get gear sets. But I can guarantee in almost every situation a hybrid such as an EK would be better served from the possibility of being able to slot both Of The Family and say Dreadkeeper's together at the same time, than Of The Family and X 3-4pc of Feywild, or augment set bonuses.
It's why I don't get the set augment system at all. It is designed to save a few edge cases such as EKs needing melee power while wearing Dreadkeeper instead of The Family. But why spend X amount hours designing that backwards shit when the straight forward solution was to just make it so you can create actually useful set bonuses? And don't say power creep/balance. No fucking EK is going to be doing more damage than a Paladin if the EK can have Dreadkeeper and Of the Family at the same time.
There are about three viable solutions to the problem and one of them doesn't isn't going to fly. They can't put the genie back in the bottle and nerf the Sharn sets, even though they really should. It's clear Lyn has no idea how to fix the Feywild sets. So the only viable option is to scrap the 3pc set augments and instead retool the design around the concept of allowing the players to actually put item sets on gear.
Option three is the most flexible; you could breath second wind into a lot of still 'good' sets but those that have fallen to the side due to the power of Sharn. I'm talking Devil's Gambit, Disciples of Rage, hell even potentially U47 shit, or even older sets that people would still use such as Abishai. There are plenty of ways you could make a lot of old content relevant and attractive again, while making the expansion seem worthwhile and not creating massive or direct power creep.
