Pretty sure those shitbags own "some" stocks of SSG when WB sold Turbine to them. They are part of the furniture now, earn easy money with whales pumping them and when they are short of funds, release Hardcore season  Roll Eyes

Unless the new swedish company does a clear-out & installs some fresh blood expect nothing to change  Cry

Was SSG actually publicly traded? I honestly don't recall. Its entirely possible they never made a dime either way, if the company's debt-to-income ratio was bad enough. The creditors get paid first.

As nice as this would be, they actually can't do that. Cordo? sure, show him the door. But the old-timey devs have engine-level knowledge of the game - the game that, remember, is a mass of badly documented spaghettis code - they have job security because without them, the next time the game breaks it won't be fixable.

That was for LOTRO and the "old time devs" are sev and steelstar, a few others. I can't be assed to keep them straight, but there are several who keep their jobs based entirely on tribal knowledge. A code archeologist is still neccessary as sev may remember why something works but have no clue how.

There's a technical term for it that gets used "Tower's of knowledge".  It's considered a bad thing.

It is a very bad thing. We actually had a lot of trouble at my last job because of that - the dev team didn't like to write anything down, and the various departments were very cloistered. The company also wasn't doing particularly well financially. So people would quite and leave for better jobs, or be laid off, and suddenly we realize there's only 1 person left who knows how a vital part of the product functions.

That kinda thing happens every day of the week at tech companies all over the world. As in placed with a real corporate structure, business plans, etc. The game industry has it much worse because the companies tend to run much more fast and loose. Try to imagine just how much more wonky it is at a company as poorly run as SSG.
