Quote:Games don't need "build diversity" to be enjoyable, although that is definitely the big draw to DDO in particular. There are turn-based strategy games I really enjoy like Into the Breach or Overland which have incredibly deep gameplay, despite having very little customization. Age of Empires 2, Heroes of Might & Magic 3, and Starcraft 2 are far more strategically complex than DDO can ever hope to be.
Hmm, RTS games are more strategically complex than an MMORPG, you say? Its almost as if game genre names have meanings. So, like, the "S" in RTS might stand for "strategy", thus indicating what the focus of games in that genre will be.
I kid, of course, I see your point. Obviously if strategy is what you want, play an RTS.
Quote:But for 1P games with build diversity, Solasta has a very high amount of party customization which allows for endless replayability. Fire Emblem 4 is another game with a staggering amount of options for character customization (in its second generation). Regalia: of Men and Monarchs has dozens of different ways you can complete the game. The Pokemon games have widespread appeal and have nearly limitless possibilities when it comes to party customization, especially the newer ones from what I hear.
Aren't the fire emblem games on DS? I've heard of them and have actually been looking for a good RPG I can play on the toilet. Is the combat turn based on real-time? That's been the big sticking point for me, really don't like real-time combat when I'm dropping the kids off at the pool.
Quote:I would suggest that all these games, plus many more that I haven't mentioned/don't know about, are better-designed than DDO.
No argument at all that there are better-
designed games than DDO, especially in other genres, newer, or just made by competent people. But we are not single-issue voters and have more factors to base our decision on than just "design quality".
My MMO filter goes something like:
-MMO(that's the genre I play)
-Fantasy(fuck star wars and to a lesser extent every sci-fi MMO out there)
-Build-diversity(be it through multi-classing or some other mechanic)
-gear-diversity
that is not random/procedurally generated-Some kind of "newgame+" mechanic(like DDO's TR system)
So far I don't know of any other game that ticks all those boxes. If you know o I'd love to hear about it. But you see, it doesn't really matter how shitty DDO is; I' looking for something very specific out of a game, so it doesn't matter how much "better" another game is if it doesn't give me all those things I'm looking for.
