^Very interesting.  If this was on Cannith, I could guess at which guild it might be.

None of this is a surprise at all. I've seen this, or its variations, play out a dozen times.

I'm generally on the side of the agitator because ossified groups like that have it coming.

Probably someone inherited the guild name eventually. Why rebuild all that renown when you don't have to?

I didn't know it was so common, I've mostly stuck with my personal guild since. That Guild website is what really supercharged the drama in my opinion, gave everyone a way to roast each other and post declarations of innocence or war, insults, whatever.

No, I still see MAC members running around pretty regularly, it was The Helpers Guild.

I hadn't thought about all this in years, and still waiting to hear Rothgar's take on it. In retrospect after the scandal broke a bunch of other beefs and butthurt among the top end of the guild came out into the open as well.

No, from what I remember it was 1-2 years after Eladiun and Sister had handed the reins over to Spade and Kal(?) and moved on.

Yeah but you were right about the douche part, even though he wasn't involved it that drama Eladiun was an all around tool.

But I'm still waiting to hear from Rothgar about what the deal was when it came to Turbine "friends" and how that protected some people or made them think they were protected or if those people were actually Turbine employees. Getting away with shit is no great feat, being told who reported you? no that's some fucking clout.

I've mostly done work in healthcare, where that'd be extremely fucking illegal, but I have this inkling that it's at least slightly fucking illegal in videogame land.

Then again, that might just be my suffering under Hillary's brain baby talking.

Illegal? No. A clear violation of corporate policy? Probably.

But corporations are just like that guild. Policy is whatever it is until the people in charge decide they want to do something different.

Quote:
Then comes this one day of doom, after I've been raiding with these guys for a couple months all hell breaks lose. All the officers get bans and the guild site turns into a melodrama from hell. Turns out that one of the newer noob players who got into the guild and drank the cool-aid found out that most of the top players in the guild were using piles of duped Otto's to insta-level as well as being duping fiends. This guy had been playing 50-60 hours a week doing everything he'd been told to do and was constantly grinding desperate to keep up with the guilds expectations and not be 'an anchor' dragging the guild down during raids. The added spice was this guy had been ridden by the officers for not learning fast enough, playing subpar flavor builds, holding himself back, etc... As you might imagine when this guy found out he reported all of them.

Gets better, he reports them says nothing to anyone in the guild about it and nothing happens for a week, then apparently he reports them again and still nothing happens, see the officer's friends in Turbine are running interference for them. So this guy must have had enough because he sends in reports on them and even fedex's a letter to Turbine and boom all the bans come down the goodie too-shoes are embarrassed for a couple weeks and the game moves on.

That's the first I'm hearing about this. This would have been a huge deal in the studio, or at least within the CS team, to receive snail mail re: guild drama. I could see it being put on display, like, "Hey, this player's so mad, they sent us a letter in the mail reporting another player."

Quote:
But to my point, I found it fascinating that not only were some high profile players protected by people at Turbine, gms I'd assume, but much more interesting was that apparently those connections were good enough that the officers were told who it was that reported them. But later on I've had a notion that maybe then didn't have friends at Turbine but rather they were people at Turbine.

Any thoughts?

I can say with a high level of confidence that any claims from this player that the guild members either had connections to the studio, or were devs themselves, is bullshit. I have even more confidence that the dev team didn't spend their free time actually playing DDO and getting involved with guild drama.

For some added context, at least at WB it was company policy to identify yourself as an employee when interacting with other players. This largely applied to social media, I would assume to mitigate any sort of bias in posting about and discussing games, although it would be suspect to post something like, "I work for WB Games, and let me tell you why this game fucking sucks." That sure as hell didn't stop me from dunking all over Gotham Knights, which came out shortly after I left the company.

At Turbine, I don't know if there was ever a strict "never reveal your status as an employee" to players policy. At least on the CS side, GMs were forbidden from revealing themselves on their player accounts. You can probably imagine the shit storm that would emerge from that. At WB, our head of HR was a Game of Thrones Conquest whale who one day outed themselves as an employee of the company, hours of gameplay and thousands of dollars later. Ideally they should have either identified themselves as an employee from the outset, or just kept their mouth shut. They ended up resigning from the studio shortly thereafter; I wasn't privy to the exact details, but their casual reveal of their status caused an uproar within the leadership team. I never understood the logic behind any of it.

That name sounds familiar. I think the kid I banned in the PvP dojo was part of it. I don't remember his character's name but I wouldn't be shocked if this is the same kid claiming everyone in the guild was "friends" with people at Turbine.

You missing the salient point Rothgar, which is mostly likely because I posted a wall of text.

As soon as they got banned the leadership knew who reported them, and how many times.

It was only after they started roasting him and getting him blackballed on the server that he admitted it. They were all insanely shocked and pissed because Up til then he had been such a brown-noser and kissass wannabe, who would do whatever the guild said. Its not like he reported everyone and then said 'fuck this guild' the guy only left the guild when he was exposed for reporting.

It wasn't the guy who said they had connections with Turbine, it was the leadership of the guild that let people know they had connections and friends at Turbine, not the guy who reported them. I'm sorry if my post didn't make that clear, they were proud of it. They asked people who caught cheating to pass it on to them so they could pass it on to Turbine, remember?

Also, its entirely possible you were not aware of the fact because you didn't play, but yeah back in the day there was a fair bit of socializing and interaction between Turbine folks and players. A lot.

In 2010 or so, whenever +3 TOMES were dropping in raids, our guild named KaTet had a dev friend who would show up on random saturdays. He'd tell us to get ready, then create piles of loot around us that we could pick up: Raid loot, tomes, WoP rapiers, gold, whatever else was sought after. It was pretty cool. I haven't run into anything like that since then.

I alluded to this in an earlier post, but we had a GM who gave a bunch of LOTRO players admin-only jetpacks, with the intention of removing them from their respective inventories after they were done playing with them. Of course, at least one of the players logged off, making it near-impossible at the time for said GM to Tdelete the pack (the GM wasn't aware he could dual-box with his admin and remove the jetpack that way, a la how we scrubbed exploiter accounts.) That GM was beyond incompetent and in my opinion, should have been fired for that and other things. Unfortunately management was at their level, and they were instead given a contractor-to-hire promotion. That's one of my many grievances about my time there that I'm still bitter over.

You got a bit strident with the "high level of confidence" and then when some folks bust out examples and you even note a guy that did shit on LOTR and that's just the guy who got caught that you knew about. Giving players jet packs and goodies sounds like connections and give and take.

Maybe just say you don't know anything about the helpers drama if you don't know anything it instead of floating some 'oh it couldn't have happened' bullshit after you failed to even read the post properly dickhead. Looking back over this thread its been fuck all for decent answers or any kind of decent insight from you and a decided avoidance of follow up questions. I should have followed my gut instinct and not wasted the time reading and posting on a thread that's a thinly disguised cry for help. Good luck with whatever existential crisis has got you feeling so shaken that you'd to come to this wretched hive of scum and villainy for some attention and appreciation.

Starting to think maybe Sasha had a point.

I know, right? He drank the idiot ego Kool-Aid, it hasn't worn off yet, and they didn't even pay him decently in exchange for the crippling of his soft skills.

But it's useful to know that the idiot ego infected even the plebs, so this whole thing had value. I'm ready to shoo him away, though.

Agreed, associating my story of giving out plat & +3 tomes with giving out admin-only tools in a different game drips to meathead level analogy fails. I’m not sure if he should get vault kicked or a lifetime membership hat.
