10 Good Minutes with Madfloyd at Pax

Print Post
So,

I decide to take a blow from the retail booth for a bit and head up to the exhibit floor to check out the Turbine booth at PAX. (Actually, I wanted to scope out all the 15 year old gals dressed up as anime checks! Cheesy)

First goal was to see if MadFloyd was available and check out if this guy is for real.  I came at him with the attitude of "hey, I am a 4+ year vet with a dozen+ capped toons and I have been shit on for the last 12 months, what are you going to do to try to keep me as a customer."

I have to hand it to the guy as his reply shows that he truely does care about the game and their customers experience, OR, he should win an oscar for passing on some of the most believable BS that I have ever heard.  For my 2 cents, I'm gonna go with the first option.

He went over what he could tell me about upcoming content releases and races (go read about it yourself ya lazy bastards, nothing new for me to report that is not posted elsewhere) and did say that going forward that there should be very little, if any, low level content released thru at least 2011.

He seemed openly very embarrased about some of the content that has been released into the game of late (IQ quests, Epic level dungeons and a few others) as most were flawed to varying degrees.

He is not a fan of the current loot tables/systems and would like to see them reworked as well as some of the current crafting/upgrade systems currently in use.

It's too bad that he is just one guy because if he was pulling all the strings, this game would have some hope if he could get done what he wants.

Unfortunately, there is a certain Fernando that is positioned higher than him at the company and as long as he is calling the shots, I see very very little chance of this game lasting for "US" as a user group as the answer to my opening question could not have been more polar opposite.  You can read all about it in my upcoming "5 wasted minutes with Fernando" thread.

Later fuckers!

MadFloyd is a really good guy - and has always been one of the best parts about meeting him at the Turbine booth each PAX. I'm glad you had that conversation with him, since it's what I'd have wanted to discuss with him had I been able to get to the con this year.

After watching the interview with Fernando where he went on about how awesome underwater combat was I can see how talking to him might be unexciting.

I see someone on that *other* forum took some photos at PAX.

or the link to the topic is:

Honestly not that impressed with how the half-orcs look, granted the photos are a bit blurry but the tusks look a bit overdone for a half-breed. And I am thinking Colgate would kill for the secret to keeping teeth that white.

Heh, I see also that half-orcs get a racial feat that increases strength as their HP goes down. I am sure the clerics will just *love* this. "Heal me, but just a little bit. Too much~ I am losing DPS! Heal more! NO~!!! Not that much!" I am thinking a lot more clerics are going to take up serious drinking in the near future  Wink

I also have to admit interest in the half-elf class, This was always my perfered race in classic D&D. Very versitile race I always thought if a bit underpowered. It will be interesting to see DDO's take on it, I hope they don't screw it up too badly.

If they dont make a complete dogs lunch of it, perhaps by this time next year, I will be playing a half-elf druid, that will bring back good old memories.  Grin

One of the pics mentioned something about an in game event with the Plane of Night(Pic 33). Any one got word on what that  will be?

The Devs are being a bit vague on this one...

The only real thing we know about it is that it will be a non-PvP event, with things to do from lowbies to lvl 20s, and the sky turns purple to let people know the event is active.

Beyond that... /shrug.

See, I'm just the opposite; I think the half-orcs look good (they look like they'll be bigger than WF Shocked ) but the half-elves look kinda...meh, unimpressive.

Is it just me or does it look like they changed the attack animation in some of those videos? Huh

Yep, those are more like full Orcs. What a shame.

I can't wait to see how they screw this up. Here is my vote:

After the Carnival series, Red Fens was a real disappointment.   I guess if you can put together a stealth party the scorpion one is fun but the others a ll very sub par.  Underwater combat is embarrassing...

The only cool parts to the underwater combat is the fact that the shaugawhatchacallems float when you kill em - and the scenery is absolutely fantastic to look at.

The "combat" itself is just some spell restrictions, ice-games movement mechanics, and a heaping pile of missed opportunity.

I still can't believe they gave out the UA gratis. If anything, they should have rewarded the prepared (I mean hell, they give us ample warning it's going to be underwater), and force those w/o a UA item to run for the Sea Paw stuff so they can breathe.

As I said - bunches and bunches of missed opportunities. And the fact that Fernando seems giddy over the whole thing makes me think that DDO is succeeding despite the idiot-child at the helm.

Keeper and the graphics team get all the credit in the world...their work has been consistently the highlight of DDO.

Well said, that pretty much sums up my shock.

I don't think I've ever seen someone come across as so unqualified.  He's up there with Rock and Czar.

Yeah the new environmental textures used for the underwater landscape are nice. Was quite a long time since we had so many new ones. Although I cannot see where they would reuse these new ones, unless they make more quests in the same type of environment.

I can't agree with a statement more...he came of like a 12 year old who just pwned in PvP.  It was staggering.  Being excited about your game is one thing but he came of as goofy.  A little professionalism goes a long way...

Anyone notice MadFloyd's new thing on the forums...looks like he is adding "Read by a Dev" to issue/suggestion threads that he reads but has no further comment on.  Great idea on his part...
