Insightful Reflexes, on a non-evasion wizard.  Discuss.

I just got that impression after you spent 13 pages calling out eladiun for being an interwebs bully when anyone who's been posting on here already knew that.  I mean, he's proud of it and hardly tries to hide that at all.

Seems a bit specious doesn't it?

I mean I suppose it can help but the margin of what it would help would be minimal without evasion.

So, I suppose it could be useful if you're worried about things like Web and Grease, but those can be nullified through other means.  That leaves the damage-reducing aspect of Reflex saves about the only good thing you would get from it.  Sure, you can increase your save from +15 to +28 or so, which means that you're avoiding 50% of the damage an extra 65% of the time (ignoring 20's and 1's and being outside the range where rolls matter), which means you avoid an extra 30% or so of damage from reflex-based spells.  That can be handy in a few spots, but Wizards already have a LOT of things they want to spend feats on, and Toughness takes higher priority for survivability, which means IR gets left behind.

It is nice to have in some pretty important places in the game and 1 extra toughness feat would not make a difference in those situations.

Even for a non-evasion wizard?  Where are you thinking of?

didn't I already tellz you in teamspeak no?

IF you had evasion = Yes

Let me ask you this, can you give us a rough estimate of what you can get as a relfex save with this?

40 int = what, 15 to your reflex saves
20 wiz = 6
GH = 4
resistance 5 = 5
crafted = 1

31-36 in case I missed something.

so you have a moderately high chance at taking half damage for shroud and non-epic,non-elites.

it's ALWAYS up to you brother. Just because I don't think something is useful, don't mean it ain't. (hehe like the wording there?)

Lots of places with fire stuff and some places with traps. Antir tends to run off and find places to die because he gets tired of waiting for people to a) get to the quest and b) waste time on buffs and box-breaking. But i generally dont die because of fire stuff or traps.

I am always happiest when in group with a Sorcerer, Antir is still standing and the Sorc is dead simply because of a good reflex save.

I am not saying it is a must have but i do find it useful and i have all the feats i really need. Stacking damage mitigation is never a bad thing.

This is pretty much how I felt about it.  Making the reflex save against spells in those situations is the difference between being alive and being dead.

31-36 is about right.  Raid buffed is at the higher end.

Actually someone else asked on TS but it got me thinking because I do have the feat on my Wizzy.  I heard your opinion and now I'm asking the brains of DDO.  Cheesy Seriously though just looking for a wider perspective.  My Wizzy (Archmage - Conjuration/Enchantment) has...

Feat: (Wizard Bonus) Extend Spell
Feat: (Selected) Insightful Reflexes
Feat: (Human Bonus) Mental Toughness
Feat: (Selected) Heighten Spell
Feat: (Wizard Bonus) Empower Spell
Feat: (Selected) Spell Focus: Conjuration
Feat: (Selected) Spell Penetration
Feat: (Wizard Bonus) Maximize Spell
Feat: (Selected) Greater Spell Penetration
Feat: (Wizard Bonus) Quicken Spell
Feat: (Selected) Spell Focus: Enchantment
Feat: (Wizard Bonus) Greater Spell Focus: Enchantment
Feat: Toughness

So what else would I take...

a SF:Necro or SF: Trans

...if I TR (which I plan on doing at some point) I would dump it for wizzy past life but short of that I'm not sold on anything else.

I really like Insightful Reflexes on any character with a low dex and a shockingly high Int.

Unfortunately, I also like a lot of other feats as well.

I'd take Insightful Reflexes over a second Toughness, but I have a feeling that I'd end up taking a lot of other feats before either of them anyway.

13 feats sounds like a lot, but they get used up fast.  Smiley

I have it on my gimpy witch and it does amke the difference between her being dead or alive in quite a few situations... It's not a WF so not a very good at self healing at the moment has failure with heal scrolls. i.e. every fireball tossed which blindsides her, bastion elite or epic DQ  the BB's she at least stands a chance to mitigate some. It's not a must have but it does have merit.

A decent chance to reduce the damage you take, from a good portion of the hardest hitting spells in the hardest quests in the game, BY HALF... Question is why wouldn't you take it?

Throw in resists, protections, and absorptions spells AND items... and those places that regularily cause party wipes, will result in you being the only one alive and shrugging off whatever spells are being thrown your way. Got a raise dead clickie?

And you'll have done it without the easy button of splashing two rogue or two monk.

I play pale master wizard now and taking care of my own healing, I do like taking half dmg from reflex save spells.

I say yes!

Elite SoS or Epic VON6 lightning base anyone?
