Guild Website Question
Feb 1st, 2011 at 11:39am
Print Post
Currently, my guild website is on guild portal and of course it's out of space and I am not going to pay for it. But I do need a website. Can you guys recommend a reliable site to set up a new website with an extremely low monthly price? Thanks.

Buy a domain and host it yourself?  Catch a good deal and you could get 3yrs for under $20.  Ask Strake for some advice, I hear he runs some sort of forum website from home on a crappy old computer...

I think Godaddy has some package deals - domainname + hosting

Yeah, if you've got an always-on connection, it's pretty easy to run a site from home.  Download a free copy of Apache, set it all up properly (read directions!), and *poof* your webpage is up and running.  Then buy a domain name and point it to your IP address and port number, you'll be up and running.

Though, purchasing space like Nevynn suggested is pretty cheap and easy as well, and not limited by your ISP's upload speed.  They'll have all the various engines and scripts (such as perl) ready to use as well, somewhat handy.

hmmmm I think I see a problem with this one because my IP address changes automatically every other month by Comcast. I will check with a a few guildies of mine who are long time members to see if they can do something along these lines. It seems the best option for what we are looking for.

Most decent home routers nowadays have the ability to update the new IP to your domain registrar, so that wouldn't be an issue.  Everyone would still point it at http://<your domain here>, and your registrar would make sure they're pointed to your current IP.

My DIR-615 does this, and cost less than $60.

Thanks, I will file that away. One of my guildies is a tech and has a spare computer system sitting around the house. He asked for a few days to make sure the system is up to date. I think I found my slave, ermm, go to guildie for my website.

If that doesn't work, I'm pretty sure Dirty Uncle Stainer will work for nudies.

What's eating up your space?  Off load that to imageshack or other free hosting sites...

I just got that impression after you spent 13 pages calling out eladiun for being an interwebs bully when anyone who's been posting on here already knew that.  I mean, he's proud of it and hardly tries to hide that at all.

http://sites.google.com

I normally like Google products, but Sites (and its precursor, Pages) sucks balls.  I spent more time trying to place images correctly than should be allowed by fucking law with their crap.

Their templates aren't bad, though, if you copy the html and remove all the scripting, then manually add the content.

For someone that knows what they are doing, it's not a good product. I'd rather just throw up a Drupal install and a pre-made template and be done.

For someone that sounds like they're something of a noob to building web sites, it's pretty sweet.

Good point, I should have considered the target audience.
