I need help. I've been locked out of DDO for 24 hours now and I'm starting to froth. My computer went all herpaderp on me all of a sudden. It not identifying my my internet - the same damned Ethernet cable that's been plugged in the back of my computer for 4 years!
The info
I've never had this problem.
As far as I can tell, it came out of nowhere. I didn't do anything I haven't been doing for the last four years.
I have Vista
I googled (via my phone) fixes for this, but none have worked.
Please help before I die of DDO withdrawal!!!!

I'm assuming you've done all the normal herpaderp troubleshooting like rebooting your computer, unplugging your modem from the power, letting it sit 30 seconds, then powering computer back up, etc.? Or making sure everything is plugged in, lol!

Sounds like a possible firewall issue. Are you sure DDO is still one of the "allowed" applications?
Many times with a new update, something changes (the DDO launcher or startup program) and some firewall programs don't recognize the new version of the file as being "allowed."
This can also happen if you recently wiped the PC, re-installed the OS, and then re-installed DDO. (This is assuming you use the Windows Internet Firewall.)
Finally, it can happen if you switch to a new Internet Security Suite or a new Firewall program. You'll need to re-teach it to allow the relevant programs out to the internet.

Arkat - it's not just DDO. No Internet at all when this happens. And I haven't changed any of my settings.

Ahhh, ok. I guess I was confused by the fact you're posting on an internet forum.
So I guess your issue is intermittent or are you posting from a different PC?

can you get hold of another computer ? To check your net connection. ( and your router at the same time )
If the connection ( and the router ) works fine, then it's the network card that went belly up. With luck it's only the drivers ( check in the hardware list if you see any unknown hardware and try to update teh drivers ), but if you're unlucky you will need to buy another network card.
If the connection ( router ) is AWOL, then you will have to find another router to determine if it's the router itself or the net connection. From there anyway, it's nagging time to the drones over the phone at your ISP.

I'd put money on it being the NIC. Buy a NIC, they're cheap as hell.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156107
There's one for $8 with free shipping. Or just pick one up at any place that sells computer parts. They're super easy to install, and you probably won't even need to install the drivers.
There's a chance it might not be the problem, but there's also a very good chance that it will solve the problem if it's a different problem. nn to spend hours fucking around with it when there's a 95% chance that an $8 part and 5 minutes of twirling a screwdriver will have you up and running again.

Changed nothing and my net worked just fine last night
Other computer loses Internet too.
New info: It seems to me (iirc) that any time a laptop is connected wirelessly that the Internet throws a hissy-fit

I've had intermittent losses for years, but infrequent and usually comes right back up. This not identifying crap is crippling though, and very recent.

Ahhhh...wireless NIC driver issue! Had a customer with almost this exact same issue a few days ago.
I updated the wireless NIC driver and changed the wireless authentication method/encryption method from WPA-PSK/TKIP to WPA2-PSK/AES.
One of these two solved the issue. Pretty sure it was updating the wireless NIC driver though.

I had a problem where the microwave oven would disrupt my wireless connection. I had to switch the wireless channel to clear that up.

Is the laptop able to connect to the interwebs when connected over WLAN, while the other computers can't?
Does the laptop (or the main computer) use DHCP? If not, switch to DHCP on both.
Does the modem connect through PPPoE? As in, does it allow multiple computers to use the interwebs at the same time?
It might be time to invest in a different modem.

Change the laptop or the desktop to a static ip, such as 192.168.0.110 (ip depends on your internal network settings).
I had a problem on my network where my son's laptop thought it needed to take an ip that was already assigned. I have no idea why it would do that, but this is how I corrected the problem.

I just got that impression after you spent 13 pages calling out eladiun for being an interwebs bully when anyone who's been posting on here already knew that. I mean, he's proud of it and hardly tries to hide that at all.

An age old fix, kick it. Works wonders.
Another one, did your turn on your surge protector that the modem is plugged into?

How do I do this? How do I know what number to use? And why would this help it?
Not being difficult, but I would like to actually learn something in the process.

I almost tried ye olde drop kick, but then I realized I left my steel-toes at work. Probably for the best, lol. Honestly, I wouldn't mind having an excuse to upgrade, but it works fine as is 95% of the time for what I need it to do so I don't see how getting a new pc would really be worth the investment.

I would narrow the problem down first because it could be elsewhere on your network.
