THF Assassin GR Build
Dec 9th, 2011 at 6:22am
Print Post
I currently have a Rogue 15/Fighter 5 that I'm planning to GR (the 15/5 was a little mistake I made on my last GR), and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do. At first I was thinking 16/4, but now I'm considering going 18/2 for Assassin III. I'll be sacrificing 4 or 22 hp, and losing 1 or 3 BAB, and potentially a feat. Currently I'm considering dropping Weapon Focus and swapping Stunning Blow out for Cleave, but I'm a bit worried that a lower BAB will make Cleave less useful in epics.

Anyway, here's the build I'm currently considering:

Gear-wise I of course have a million other switch-ins/items the character builder didn't have, but build-wise that's what I think I'll be going for. I'm a little worried that the drop in base attack bonus might reduce my general effectiveness, but currently I don't have any to-hit problems (I mostly run eVon/HouseP/Fens, eADQ [just the raid for the most part], elite Shavarath quests and whatever difficulty ToD I can get into, Hard/Elite VoD and HoX, and non-epic MA and LoB).

Any thoughts/questions/suggestions/mockery/dire warnings for me?

You'll only drop 1 BAB for changing the split you have now, no changes for 16/4. You lose 1 BAB @ lvl 17 rogue and that's it.

Rogue is a 3/4 BAB, fighter full BAB. You do lose 1 to hit for dropping weapon focus.

Instead of dropping Weapon Focus, drop all three Two Handed Fighting feats to pick up the Two Weapon Fighting chain.

You'll get an extra 35-ish damage per attack against Sneak-Attackable enemies.  Can't see turning down 35-ish free damage per attack against most of the enemies in the game.

You'll also do more damage against constructs, undead and elementals with TWF than with THF if you have appropriate weapons just because of the extra 0.8 * [smiting/disrutption/banishing/bane damage].

There are a lot of things that you can argue about a rogue build, but THF vs. TWF is not one of them.  TWF is vastly superior.

Despite my deep seething hatred of rogues, only a fucking moron would make them THF.  Are you a fucking moron?

It was rhetorical.

Also, FTFY.

I am currently playing a THF Assassin and absolutely love it.  You gotta build it right though.  Start with 20 rogue and go from there.  I will post my build for you later.

The point of an insight assassin is to maximize the use of Intelligence to power your assassinate, trap skills, evasion, and skill points.  This also removes the need for dex gear, leaving you better gear choices.  Having an instant death attack that reliably takes down 2-3 enemies at a time with a high DC on a 6 second cool down timer that does not rely on SP is incredibly at epic levels.  Contrary to popular belief, there is very little “set up time” required.  At the same time, the need for the extensive TWF feat line is removed and opens up greater possibilities.  TWF rogues are by far the DPS leader when compared to THF when you look at low AC mobs, it is in the high AC ranges that the difference is seen.  I have heard all the arguments about this buff and that buff, but you can still have those buffs on a THF rogue, and hit even higher AC.

This build features the Half-elf for the fighter dilettante for access to more strength and weapon proficiencies to the best two handed weapons with the falchion as the weapon of choice.  Improved sunder is present for the Lord of Blades raid and other raid bosses.

Cleave and power attack were more useful at lower levels (cleave allows for AoE sneak attacks), and will be replaced with the past life rogue feat and perhaps another toughness.  As I said, this is my current build and has not been fully optimized yet.

The TWF feat line is not preferred, as the extra glancing blows can draw unwanted aggro.

My current HP is 407 unbuffed, projected is 427 when I slot item toughness on an epic item.

HP breakdown:

Permanent
252 Base
10 draconic
40 superior false life
60 +6 Con item
45 GS Air/Air/Air item
20 Item Toughness
15 guild slot (20 for higher guilds)

12 Intelligence (24 + 6 item, +2 spyglass, +2 guild shrine)

The TWF line does not provide glancing blows.  It does allow you to fucking skyrocket your dps though.  A fucking THF rogue, I cannot believe you admitted to playing this piece of shit.  You need to fucking ragequit life.

TWF assassins also get three or four chances to assassinate when they doublestrike.

TWF on assassins is THE way to go.

Christ. It's THF that gives glancing blows, not TWF. Also, your AC will still suck. You lose a ton and gain nothing.

Did you really think bringing it to the fucking Vault was going to get you a different response?

I knew I had seen this build before.  Learn the game mechanics first, then post build advice.  THF assassin is like a pure monk with a great axe in his hands.

DO NOT POST A THF PURE MONK NOW!!

lol THF rogue.

although I did craft a two hander for low level on my rogue. didn't feel like making two of something i'll outgrow in a few levels. that acid burst flametouched falchion of undead bane is handy, until i get some disruptors.

My PnP experience makes you misunderstand me.  I am too used to talking THaC0.  My point is that when you are up against an enemy with high AC, you can hit it more often and thus out DPS TWF in the extremes.  It's about epic boss beat down, not trash killing.  Trash killing is even easier on this build with a high assassinate.  I have played TWF khopesh assassins, they are boring to me now.  I have much more fun with this one.  I am not trashing TWF at all, it is very good DPS and very effective, but once you reach extreme AC while playing a 15 BAB toon, the DPS slows down.

How does THF make you hit more often than TWF?

With TWF you get 2 or 3 chances on each assassinate attempt.
So with the same DC the chances to get a mob are much higher on a TWF rogue.

There are scrolls of divine power available. Add the active rogue PL and you should hit pretty much everything.

Except epic bloodplate. I hope they'll fix improved destruction soon...
