Anyone else intrigued by this?  It could be total shit but Trion is developing so that's a plus.  The whole integrated concept is interesting.

I heard about this.  I find the idea very intriguing.

Pipedream:  I can't help but wonder if your character is strong enough and well known enough, that they might even make an episode with the character getting a mention or something.  Maybe at least a guild mentioned as a faction.  It could make for some very fun and competitive gaming.

I have been looking for a good, let me stress that, good post appocalyptic MMO gaming experience.  I was really looking forward to the work on the Fallout MMO, (big fanboy) but it seems that is no longer going to happen.  Another I have been looking at with some hope is Survarium, but I really will need to brush up on my Russian, as the STALKER fan base is largely russian speaking.

Anyway, I may have to give Defiance a glance.  I am really getting sick of CITW.

Me too.  I follow each release religiously than I am ultimately disappointed.

The devs specifically mentioned the fact that they were planning to work some guild names into the show (at a minimum).  Can't remember which vid, but it's on YouTube somewhere.
The conclusion that I came to after watching a few vids was that the game will be set in one location (St. Louis maybe? Can't remember) and the show will be set somewhere else (West coast somewhere? Again, can't remember the deets).  This wasn't directly/specifically stated in anything I've seen, but I seem to remember something about the main character of the show arriving somewhere after having worked with the players in game (as an NPC) shortly before.  This is why I think they are two different locations, one for game, one for show.  If he just arrived somewhere, then wherever he came from is where he helped the players.

I'm worried that the show will be decent but the game will be complete shit.  I'm hoping that I'm wrong on that one.

I had originally seen and/or read a discussion where it was going to be cross platform (all players played together regardless of console/pc) but now that seems to have changed to platform restricted, which is a shame.  It probably had something to do with not being able to get the tech for it working in time.  They had to be damned sure it was going to be ready by the release date.  Pushing it back isn't really an option like it normally would be because of the TV show.
But the gameplay looks better than I expected, so I'm probably going to give it a shot.

After doing a little more research, watching a few more vids, and speaking to someone that played in one of the BWEs, I pre-ordered last night.

Don't expect anything groundbreaking or extremely innovative.  It is a shooter after all.  Instead, combine most of the best parts of a shooter with some of GW2's dynamic events system, and do it in an open world, giving it that MMO social flavor.  Then add in some large scale PvP that you can opt into and some 4 man co-op for "dungeons."  Then picture it done as a Elder Scrolls game, in a classless system, where you can have one character who can learn everything, but has to choose what is active at any given time.
All signs tell me that this is what it's going to look like, so I'm sold.

To correct:
The cross platform tech works fine.  The players in beta are playing cross platform.  But there are first party issues (*cough*XBox*cough*) such that platforms will be segregated upon release.

Yep, as I preordered I had one guaranteed. And the NDA is lifted for it, so there will be information galore.
The reason it was under NDA so long was that there are some minor spoilers for the show in the game, and they wanted to keep them under wraps as long as possible.

Did you play any tonight, and if so what are your thoughts?
To me it feels like a Borderlands/Halo mix, with a little bit of CoD thrown in.  Kind of generic (but it is a shooter after all, and that generic feeling that most shooters have is usually what makes me lose interest).
That said, I'm having a blast.  Been playing since I got home from work almost ten hours ago.
The social MMO style makes it a winner.  It adds a layer of fun that I haven't felt before in a shooter, which totally negates the somewhat generic feel of it for me.  The addition of the races/trials/rampages/etc are just icing.  There's a ton of different things to do to keep you occupied.
I'm going to get some Shadow War PvP in tomorrow sometime. If it's as good as I've heard reports of, I can see myself playing this for quite a while.

Maybe because ammo drops like crazy from everything you kill, and there are ammo boxes that fill up every type of ammo you carry littered all over the world...
Buy it? It's free, and everywhere.
The only times I ever had any ammo issues were in Ark Falls, and that was mainly my fault for focusing on Mama too much while other players killed the trash.  Had I been killing trash as well, I wouldn't have had issues.

Learn to aim.  Ammo lasts a lot longer that way.
Did you preorder or just get a beta invite? And on what platform?

well yeah but during that sniper mission I ran out right as the super mutant boss showed up. I farmed for about 20 mins to get my ammo back up. I mean they could have put a dump right beside the vendors if they wanted to use that mechanic.

did you find the mutant crawlers to be annoying?
two hits and I was on the ground.

I found the game to be fun but I just wish the servers were multi platform. Cry

I might pick it up later but I got just cause 2 and the witcher 2  and those should keep me busy for awhile.

The vendors always had an ammo box nearby.  You must have just missed it/them.

At first they were, but once you figured out their telegraph dodging was easy enough.

Yeah, multiplatform would have been cool.  The Alpha server is multiplatform, and they originally wanted to run the live servers that way, but MS and PS have issues with it, so they can't. Sad
I don't understand their issues though.  The thought process is that they don't want to run against a competing platform.  But the fact of the matter is that players will play from which ever platform has more of their friends on it, and that may not be their platform of choice.  So being assholes about running game servers with a competing console may in fact cost them sales.  If they'd just stop and think about it then they'd realize that if players prefer XBox or Ps3 would purchase for that system in a multiplatform game, but instead many of them will buy PC because not all of their friends have a console, but almost every gamer has a computer.

what pisses me off is that they did it with that shadowrun game.
I was really looking forward to that aspect when I heard about it.

That (and a few others) are basically grandfathered in because they existed before the respective companies made the rule.

Haven't made it to end game yet, no.

As far as customizing your weapons, it's fairly extensive.
Each weapon has the ability to have up to four mod slots. Stock, barrel, mag & scope.  Not all weapons have slots on them to begin with.  But you can add a mod slot to any weapon that needs one (randomly placed if there is more than one slot without the ability to be modded yet).
It takes ten minutes (and some ark salvage) to add a slot, during which time you cannot equip the weapon.  It takes five minutes to remove any mods you've added, with the same non-equip stipulation.  But beyond that it happens in the background and you can continue playing.
During the time that either of these things are happening, you cannot add any mods to any weapons (which is instantaneous after a few clicks to set it up), because your modding process is tied up with integrating the slot or removing the mods.
The mods themselves are widely varied between usefulness, and once you get to higher level they can be found as synergy packs.  IE: if you have one mod of a specific synergy, you get bonus A.  With two you get bonus B.  With three, bonus C. And with all four synergy mods you get bonus D.  These are cumulative, and in addition to the basic attributes of the mods.
So getting an entire set of one synergy, or a half set of two different synergies, will probably be the way to go depending on what you want out of the weapon.
