here for you all to have fun with, the new Pando shit they have decided we had to bear with :
https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/435076-Installing-Akamai-Netsession-In...

Basically it's a peer to peer piece of shit that install itself in a sneaky way.

First experiment :
it hides in the registry :
HK_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and it spawns two instances of itself. ( at least on my computer... at a guess maybe an instance by CPU core/Thread... I need to check with my work laptop )

Steps to kill it are so far :
- delete the registry entry and kill the processes.

It can also be uninstalled since it seems to be a separate install from DDO.

Killing the process and deleting the registry entry had no impact on my client update.
( I did it while the client was updating )

Anyway, another proof that there's a problem at Turbine, it's mentioned nowhere in the Release notes that we are going to be hit by yet another piece of craphogware after the awesomiumprocess debacle.

Is this only for the Lama client, or are they using it for the live game already?

Edit: Fawk, i didn't think I'd have to remove Pando after DLing the game earlier this month, since they supposedly stopped using it.  But nooooope, it was there.

L-Space Client for now, but since what appears in L-Space will be there on live soon we can expect it's going to hit live.

And from the op of the official forum thread it seems that it might already be there on live too for new downloads.

Well, I can't find any trace of it (although I'm not really good at this sort of thing) and I DLed the client ~Jan 5th this year, so it would be very recent if they have started using it.

restarting the L-Space Client reinstalled it...
rewrote the registry key and restarted the fucking exes.

At least I have blocked the traffic from this piece of crap in the firewall. nothing can go out ( both in TCP and UDP ) and nothing can come in.

I'll have to find how to make sure it doesn't gets launched each time I start the client.

the piece of shit resides in c:\users\%USER%\appdata\local\akamai

I'm going to try to make that directory unwritable.

Since Pando went out of business on 8/31, they needed to find a new way to save on download costs, and this is it.

well it doesn't impact the downloads, since I killed the processes and removed the registry key while the client was upgrading.

As a side note anybody knows where I can find Pylotro  ( and the related python packages ) for Windows ?

For the time being since there's this piece of shit in the L-Space client and the character copy tool is broken I won't connect to L-Space... But I need to explore fully the pylotro option before this piece of shit goes live.

The "official" server hosting pyLotro went down a few months ago, but I have found this post (in French) still linking to valid URLs (both to an already "compiled" .exe, and the Python sources).

Is the update function working on pylotro?  Every time I need to update, I run pylotro first (since it doesn't hang) but need to finish it off with the official launcher :<

very strange

Btw, another good resource is here: https://github.com/n0la?tab=repositories

This is the guy that wrote the command line python launcher and combat logger.

Interesting...

I bug reported the installation of this piece of crapware and I've just received a mail from QA asking me for more details :

Quote:
Greetings Notrealflav Brokencopytool

In order to analyze the issue you describe, it would be helpful if you would be willing to provide some additional information.

Where did you download the client from?

What operating system are you using?

Have you installed any other software on the computer lately?

When was the last time you updated the Lamannia client before this?

Sadly the answers are obvious, except maybe the OS.
- Turbine
- Windows 7 x64
- Nope.
- The Last time L-Space was up. That was before x-mass IIRC.

So I really recommend that everybody bug report it... If we are enough to consider that a bug they might react.  Roll Eyes

Half baked code. Wasn't supposed to be turned on at all. Reverted in the next lama build.

Interesting and good to know.

Now the char copy tool needs to be fixed so that I can spend my time actually doing some real test instead of testing how to bypass half baked code.

Why can't they just slap a torrent up somewhere instead of having us (unintentionally) installing pieceofshitware?
