I know Ink currently plays Eve ... thinking about joining him on his newbie tours. These stories always entertain me.

I feel it's a bit unsporting then going after and ganking the player after splatting their big old fucking expensive ship. But Eve seems to be like that from the outside. I played in high security for a couple of months when a friend coaxed me in but never got into it.

Be thankful you didn't Eve is the crack of MMO's.

I recognized that after the first couple months playing. I gave all my stuff away and deleted my account. That game will consume you and every spare moment you create for yourself to be on the game.

Same here, when I realized I was setting alarms and logging on from work or in the middle of the night to adjust my training it was time to go.

Yeah, the whole rota thing they had going on in that story makes me think I had a narrow escape. The PvE was too boring for me and too much of a learning curve, and I wasn't going anywhere near PvP as I sucked at flying ships Smiley

Yeah that's a mess.  I'm not sure I like games where the PvP is that risky.

The guy lost what was basically a $3,000 ship.  For no good reason than because it was fun for the other players to ruin his game.

Did the player not have the option of logging out in an area that was "non-PvP"?  Or is the entire game environment PvP?

I don't understand much about EvE.  Trying to figure out if the guy had other options when logging out that would have not exposed his ship.

Yeah, my husband logged back into Eve after being out of it for a couple years.  His biggest, most expensive airship had been docked in a territory his side controlled, but when he logged back in, they had been pushed to the other side of the map and he was deep in hostile territory.

He spent a couple days planning the best time to move it to a safe or neutral zone, got a couple of people he knew to come out and escort him, logged on at the time when there were the least likely to be on, and got blown up going through the first gate.

He even told his attackers he was just returning to the game and their response was, "So what?  Not our problem."

He who has the least life wins pvp, well thats what it seems like from what iv'e read about here. It sounds like it can really suck you in, high stakes and all is what probably makes it so addicting and exciting for a lot of people.

IIRC, there are full security areas, but I don't know if that just means the in game AI fuzz turns up, which sounds like not a challenge for this lot.

I feel sorry for the guy too. A lot of work splatted for shiggles. But PvP is not my thing at the best of times.

It's really dumb. High stakes/no rewards game. You buy a ship for $3000, someone decides to blow it up... No wonder EVE players are so fucked up in the head.

From what I remember, there are "secure" systems, like the one with security rating of 0,5-1.0... But they're not totally secure. They're kind of secure in a sense of preventing turds for blowing up newbies who just joined the game, for fun... But if you're carrying really valuable stuff, they aren't really that secure. I don't really know how that applies to titans.

Yes, DDO and WoW players are no-life losers lite.  The diet coke of MMOs.

You don't buy the ship for cash.  The real money value comes from the fact that you can transfer in-game currency to plex which you can use to buy playtime or sell to other players.  It's would be like selling trading plat or astral diamonds for DDO playtime cards legally through a system run by Turbine.

Most of the time you can insure your ships to cover most of the loss from being blown up.

The reward for the risk is that guild/corps in EvE create a real high stakes living world and economy.  They don't need content from developers.  They don't bitch about a broken raid.  They build the world via their actions, be it mining, crafting, fighting, scheme...it is all defined by the players.

While there is non-PvP space, the biggest rewards exist outside of that space.

Insurance only covers some of the cost of the ship though. All the equipment slotted is completely lost, unless you can salvage some of it. And I imagine that the equipment you need to slot on a titan is fucking crazy expensive.

Plus the dude got podded, and implants are not cheap. No insurance for that.
