Yeah that's why certain things are done over voice in game or out of game chats.
If people still /tell about it they deserve what they get.

We usually short man raids in my guild rather than pug.  We'll damn sure not let outsiders in if they have the capability to cry to a DM if we give em shit for playing like a fucktard.  So one more Turbine activity that discourages group play- great job, team.

Of course they don't record voice chat, because that would probably be illegal, even if you agreed to possibly being recorded in the terms of service you still have a reasonable expectation of privacy in your communications in which turdbine is not a party of (ie, communications not with GMs/staff etc).

Then again, i don't practice law in california so take this shit with a grain of salt.

I don't understand why some people are so negative about this announced. Some in the motherforums even called it witch hunt...

They clearly say that they are talking about text chat. They even say they won't do something against players who just say something like 'fuck this shit' or 'suck my dick' without refering this to another player, because it gets blocked by the profanity filter.

And when I think about people like stoddard I really like this statement. Gives good hopes that reporting him won't be useless.

I am very sure they only ban/warn players if they have proof of text chat that they said something bad.

They can't really record /tells...
Well technically they can, like voice chat, but since it's targeted at one single person and not broadcast in a public ( or semi public for chat channels/parties channels ) forum, it could technically be seen as a privacy breach.

( since it's The Vault : how about a married couple cybering through /tells while playing ? Are they going to ban them because of all the sexual stuff they told to each other ? )

Come on, be serious, the only chats they are going to monitor tightly are the general/trade/advice channels in all the public areas. Eventually they are going to monitor guild chats... but to be able to monitor all the existing chat channels + all the tells would require more servers and storage than Turbine has.

I never thought that they would keep a complete log, but I always assumed that certain words would raise flags.

That means that they have to parse it, and eventually store it once it raised a flag.
That's still more computing power than what they are willing to put in DDO, even if it solves the storage part.
( storage being an extract and only temporary ).

You know how well text compresses?  I'd be shocked if they didn't have archives of everything that's ever been written since the game launched.  Storage costs are negligible, and it's not like you have to run zgrep on the actual server...

Wayfinder server would only require an apple 2e for gods sake.

I think you confuse ddo's player chat amounts due to the fact you are in telecom and deal with immense amounts. Even if all 500 concurrent players on a server did nothing but spam tells the whole time they were on, it would not be too much effort to log, parse and delete that. I think that situation is less likely then lightning striking us both, so the tell logs wouldn't be that onerous to deal with.

And don't forget that the chat server seems to be intependant from the game servers, because usually the chat is still working, even if some instances are crashing.
Or maybe the virtualization of the chat server is working very well.

And they don't need to save chatlogs forever, with the easy rightclick->report on specific chat messages they only need to save them for some minutes and if no one is reporting a message they can delete it again and only need to keep  the chats around the reported lines.

So the question is if Turbine wants to use computing power for that. But since every message seems to go through the chat server anyways it shouldn't take too much computing power to add each transfered chat line to a logging file(or some kind of buffer whos content gets saved to a file every few minutes), especially if this is an integral part of the chat server and not a system which was setup later on top of the chat server to observer what the chat server is doing.

For some reason, /tells seem to be on the same server as the game worlds, contrary to every other chat.

They really could have worded that last sentence a lot better.  I read it as, the "game experience" has made these poor, fresh noobs go fucking banana ape shit and have no choice but to tell someone!!!  Ha!

Wow, that's terrible, Burntz is such a dick.

Uhm...he's gone though, as far as I can tell. Probably died choking on his father's cock.
