Recommendations for pauseable RPG games
Sep 6th, 2014 at 2:44pm
Print Post
Just coming to learn what new habits I need for a young baby. Ordered myself a moderately good gaming laptop & looking for some things easy to pause, save & abandon at a moment's notice. I'm quite into turn based RPGs right now (loving Andor's Trail on Android) and have got myself an emulator to replay some old SNES favourites, give DA:O another bash, check out a few RPGs from Steam that've been gathering virtual dust...

Anybody come across anything afk-friendly on the RPG tip they'd like to enthuse about and recommend?

Eh, emulators + save states, easy to leave anytime. Can just get anything, pause or not.

As for recommendations, try any of these, a vast majority are RPGs. Was faster to screenshot than to manually re-list RPGs only  Tongue

I know fuck all about console games but good pc list there Distributed ! Vampire the Masquerade is glorious, omg.
Fallout. Xcom series.

First Witcher,  Anachronox, System Shock, Knights of the old republic -  excellent "action rpgs".
Age of Wonders 3, Disciples 2, Heroes of Might at magic 4 - more like turn based strategies with rpg elements.

And new Divinity.

Shit I want to install everything now.

Oh no, I've been spotted!

Also have System Shock 1-2 installed but strangely not in my quick launch lists, just made me realize that.

I am a huge fan of Turn Based Strategy games.

The old ones mostly.

Final Fantasy Tactics- classic and deepest of the bunch

Tactics Ogre and earlier version titled  Ogre Battle -shitty name great game

Wildarms xf -probably the most balanced one out of all because swapping classes/jobs counts most.

Spectral Force 3 -might be my favorite. While not as deep and balanced as FFT and Wildstar. The finisher type special attacks are so over the top glorious.

Dungeons & Dragons Tactics why not, right? cute but too short and not deep enough.

Fire Emblem series.

Havent played any in many years since getting into MMOs. Dont know about any new ones and most of the best are Japanese only. Damm u Japan y u so gud at this?

Ended up reading through the introduction of the revised core book again after seeing your post a second time  Grin

Highly recommend it and all the other VTM books to anyone that enjoyed the PC games!

Planescape Torment... Bloody hell... Need to find a disk now... ( mine was on long deceased floppies... it was that time when you could find games in both 1 CD or a heap of floppies. )

If you can't find it, gog.com

Tons of old games there at good prices, which were all modified to work properly on recent operating systems.

Love that website, hope they'll be able to get the old Magic the Gathering game one day.

If you like D&D type games, I was a huge fan of the Temple of Elemental Evil game that Troika developed for Atari.  It had a unique UI and was a great implementation of D&D rules.  Get the mods though.  The base product is buggy as hell.

The Infinity Engine rocks!

Any of these games will be a lot of fun.  Although technically real time vs. turn based, your ability to pause at any time gives you great AFK ability.

They are actually turn-based, but by default the turns are auto-completing, as the mechanics are calculated turn-by-turn. If you enable "Pause at turn end" in the options, they become completely turn-based.

Surprised noone mentioned (or I failed to see it in the lists):

  1. Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magic Obscura
  2. Knights of the Old Republic 1/2
  3. Shadowrun Returns (+Dragonfall expansion, which is better than original)

Ooh thanks. Was too late sadly but appreciated.

Heh your Paint skills would be sorely missed, ofc. Thanks for all the further suggestions, all. Some I've played but nowhere near the majority. Some are also good reminders that some greats are due a replay.

Nice list.  I'll add in Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue for Playstation.  I had fun with both games.
Arc the Lad, a tactical rpg series, is on PS1 also. I haven't played those yet but they look fun.

One thing for everyone who is a "skeptic" on this issue: Insurance companies are basing their underwriting on the assumption that it is real. They are refusing to write policies on homes that are likely to be in danger from rising seas 20 years from now, even though the resale rate of the homes is so high that they could keep writing policies for another 10 years and still not have to pay out on 1 policy in 5, but that would be irresponsible. Unethical, as well, but that's never stopped anyone before.

Opposite of gratz I'm afraid, I want to subtract it from the world population already. Always thought babies were shit and now I've been proved right. Hopefully he'll be an interesting toddler soon. Meanwhile, I can work through all these lovely recommendations whilst I wait. Thanks all!

Yes Stick of Truth is on the wishlist, thanks - wasn't sure if it was any good but figured it was worth a shot. Good to hear it's worth it! Thanks all others too.

It was hilarious from start to finish, definitely recommend it.

And yes, it was actually also a very good RPG.
