you don't upgrade if you're planning to go into maintenance mode.

I would like to point out that they are not upgrading, but migrating ddo, lotro and ac to the same server bank. Sure, its an upgrade for turbine, but for the players, I wont hold my breath waiting for this snafu. For gods sake, look at their last integration/migration of their forums...

It might not even be an upgrade for turbine.  Could be the new data center is just more cost effective.

Sev made it clear they were also migrating to new hardware somewhere in the thread.

I don't believe it either, but the pitch is that it's an upgrade to my reading.

The new facility will provide both Dungeons and Dragons Online and our friends over at The Lord of the Rings Online with more stability, greater CPU power, and a better networking capability. This will complement our ongoing efforts to reduce lag. It’s a big project and as the year progresses we will be working toward a date where we will migrate to the new datacenter.

I don't for a minute believe it is for the player's benefit.
It could be moving to a lower tier option at cheaper cost, but they actually upgrade their 10 year old hardware in the process.
Who knows.

I migrated to a new laptop in january ( the old one was 4 years old ) at work.

the new laptop is soooo much better that :

- I lost the SSD the previous one earned after a HDD crash. ( and I was told that this won't happen again, as SSD is NOT an option anymore )
- I lost the internal DvD Drive.
- The new laptop is slower than the old one... to try to compensate localy a RAM extension to 8 Gb was bought for everybody.

and the thing is still sucking more than the old one....

Migrating on new hardware will not improve the game if the hardware is chosen with only the lowest cost as the choosing factor.

Vargouille told me, when I asked ( about G-Land Crashes ) that a given game server has it's own hardware...
If they are 10 year old servers it should start to be difficult to find spare parts. Also at that time virtualization was not something thought of.
By moving to a new rack of servers they can virtualize servers on new hardware.... the hardware might be more powerful, but as there's more things to do it might not change anything.

Now It depends who drives the change... is it Turbine that try to cut costs ? or WB that try to consolidate all it's IT in a single place ?

Because if it's the second case, the wallet might be open.
( been there done that here... moving and consolidating test plants when we moved from one building to another... and basically it was open wallet season : if we wanted something for the infrastructure, we could buy it... High end rack cabinets, Cat 6 cabling, High end Terminal Concentrators, High End KVM, ... we got everything we asked )

Both. They can consolidate both hardware and manpower. Its becoming more commonplace. gw2 and wildstar are on the same server farm. This way you can keep marginal cash flow games running far longer then the numbers would allow. Turbine is also merging all their online stores to be integrated at the same time. I think its important to note that.

I can't tell for AC ( if there's a store there ) but DDO and LoTRO stores are actually hosted by Akamai...
in the case of DDO some direct store links were leaked by Kookie in screenshots, and from there it was easy to find the LoTRO one...
( the screenies don't shows the links anymore )

the store needs more affordable throwaway money items, but not a new store

the demand is sorta like my favorite quote in the leaked stuff

Quote:
It was suggested by some players in the past that they prefer feather falling items to be clickies, so they don't have to always have Feather Falling on while wearing the item.

'in the past' must mean 2010 cuz ff hasn't been a problem with players for a long time

not even the worst epic pug have i heard someone complain about the lack of ff clickies

Our data shows that drop rates for ff clickies have been underperforming.

It would be awesome if somebody were to start trolling SeverancePay - every time he says "players have been demanding" or "our data shows", set up a survey and publish the real results. Maybe require a forum name so CordHolio can't stuff the ballot box.

Meh, the forum paladins would stuff the ballot box anyway. But yeah, the shit he says with a straight face is amazing.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

I am not sure about that. In 2010 and before, we used the ml1 ring of feathers and other permanent ff items that we just toggled on and off when needed. Most folks ran permanent ff except for the ole tempest spine.

He's trying way too hard to keep the payments coming in till the last minute. That is a goodbye letter. Cancel now and ask for your money back while you still can. Seriously, read that a few times. He almost has himself convinced. The server move is a ruse.
