Name literally a single "mmo name" 2.0 that has ever been successful.

Go for it.

Find a single solitary MMO sequel that's been a success. Just one.

Point taken.

Can you name two?

Roll Eyes

If I name another are you going to then ask for a third?

If you give a mouse a cookie...

But yeah, GW isn't very similar to DDO. Its largely a PvP game, which makes adding a number to the end a lot easier(How many iterations of Street Fighter are there now?) But yes, GW2 would definitely be considered successful.

I still maintain that making a DDO 2 is the worst idea anyone has ever had. Ever.

Most MMOs are not very similar to DDO. The customization of DDO characters in conjunction with the methodology of further customizing a character through Action Points and the fact that the game continues to add content all over the level range of the game (where-as other MMOs increase a level range and just add content for that level range or for the end game), not to mention the game is an amalgamation of additive and multiplicative bonuses, yields DDO to be fairly unique.

That said, Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 is being positively received.

The underlying game system is definitely very unique, but then the same is true for most MMOs. We are talking about trying to compare things that are only very, very, very lousily related.

But it's those exact traits you describe that make the concept of a "DDO 2" even worse. Blizzard could get away with making a "World of Warcraft 2" and probably make it popular because WoW nerds like to believe WoW actually has a story. Each expansion "Continued the story" so yeah, you could make a sequel and just make it an expansion where everyone starts off back at lvl 1.

Also, Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 doesn't really count, Final Fantasy XIV was an abysmal failure. 2.0 Was basically them trying again - the original was basically a rushed beta.

Well if it's only about random loot, it's seems pointless to waste the energy and resources at this late point. In today's game there are so many level specific named items that exceed anything you can pull from loot now.

I seldom even look at it anymore, but a few years ago it was one of my favorite parts akin to the way rolling the free dd is, there was a small chance you could find something really neat and unusual.

The main problem is that random loot is so incredibly random - the odds of actually picking up anything good are slim to none.

Then it gets completely blown out of the water by named loot.

Its not that there ISN'T anything good, its that the odds of finding something good that fits into in available slot are so small no one even bothers. I keep finding really amazing stuff and trying to sell it, and no one will buy it. No one's looking. No one wants it.

I once pulled a scintillating longbow of supreme good, lvl 14  item with 1d6 electric damage, lighting strike, and 3d6 good dam vs non-good targets, red slot.  those old loot tables with supreme law, axiomatic, etc; were the best.

That is how you would expect any rational dev team to make these changes, so plan for the opposite.

I suspect they will do things like nerf the +8 level 15 items to +7, add in +7 random gen loot at level 17, random gen +8 at 19, and do nothing to buff any of the existing BtC raid loot, maybe also adding miniscule possible +PRR/MRR bonuses on random gen loot at all levels, plus some other sort of new system to give us more "fun" "tough" choices.

QFT. Sad, sad truth.

Meanwhile games like AC2 and EQ2 failed quite abysmally, which are much more in line with DDO. GWs seems to be more of "A fantasy themed fighting game with some PvE content on the side" - not that that's bad, but I mainly play DDO because it doesn't have shitty PvP messing up my fun.

you merely requested an MMO that met the criteria of having a sequel successfully launch, and stay prosperous. GW2 is a MMO, and is still raking in the revenue. ^-^

If you asked me to name a second, i dont think i could, sadly.

goddammnit.. guess there are two, though FF14 2.0 is still too new to decide if it will remain successful, give it a year.

I tend to agree.  The days of pulling Wounding of Puncturing or Vorpals and having them be the best items is long gone.  The only loot gen stuff I wear these days are the convalescence of superior parrying bracers.  I have them in 20, 40, and 60 heal amp varieties.

The List so Far

Guild Wars 2
Final Fantasy XIV (as re-release or "sequel" to FF XI?)

For Your Consideration

Planetside 2
New Runescape

Maybe/Maybe Not

How do we feel about City of Heroes / City of Villains? Companion games?

Secondary problem is that lootgen items cover such a narrow band of things these days. If lootgen could once again cover a wider band of things with inferior numbers to named, then the odd build could indeed be expected to slot in that one freakishly-weird item that makes an otherwise-impossible named gearset not work.

Yeah, I'd love to see a return to those being available.  I pulled a club (or something equally sucky) of debilitation the other day, so some of them are still around, but those super enchantments were about the only thing FoS did really well.

Still have my +6 Seeker handwraps of A Thousand Suns waiting for unarmed monks to unsuck...

Too bad they don't drop anymore, either.

I've been going through the caches of various parked characters, and finding all sorts of neat stuff (aside from the multiple enchantments I grieved for above) that just doesn't drop any more.

+4 Banishing of Greater Elemental Bane
ML10-12 Banishers, Smiters and Disrupters
Race Restricted gear

I kind of enjoyed the days when my melees carried banishers, disruptors, smiters, vorpals, Triple Positive Maul, Min II, and Lit II.  Good times when being prepared was important.

I have a couple of niceish levelling items that are lootgen. Notable are ML7 +6 stat items (masterful and cursed), various +6 items with one or two augment slots at ml13 and 15. Although to be honest, the stuff at 13 and 15 doesn't get used as much any more due to the new U27 and 28 stuff.

Heh, I also still have a half-orc restricted invisibility clicky cloak somewhere or other. Most useless thing in the universe, but I keep it for memories Sad

Don't get too misty-eyed over feather loot; he's still the dude that screwed up things like cloak of ice (so glad I still have my old one).

I just started pulling some of that gear on a recent ITR.  It is replacing a lot of the VoD/Hound/Sora Kell stuff that I was using on several characters in this level range.

Yep, the ol' golf bag o' weapons.  Generally a full inventory page on my TWFers!

Ehh, credit where it's due.  The ghostbaning era was awful, but just before that, things were pretty good, and those ultra enchantments actually made opening high level chests fun.

Agreed. All those cool new prefixes and suffixes like "of a Thousand Suns" made lootgen stuff much more interesting than it is now.

There are still a few of them around, but none of the really cool ones.

I've seen Tidal fairly often, and Debilitating just recently, as I said.

I still have a few Lacerating and the like kicking around, (some with Guild slots!)  mostly for trade bait (I'm also waiting for something worth trading for!)
