That sucks.  I doubt we get any details about the impact on DDO, but it would be nice to know where the cuts were made.

Signs have been on the wall in our super-special people clubhouse Ash, as for impact...I'm pretty sure we have and will continue to see the details of it in the actual game experience!  Grin Grin

WB response:

Quote:
Update: Warner Bros. PR has issued the following statement to Massively OP:

“Turbine is transitioning into a free-to-play, mobile development studio, and as a result we are eliminating some positions. The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons online games will continue to operate as they do now. Re-focusing and reducing the studio size was a difficult decision for the company, and we are grateful to all of the Turbine staff for their considerable contributions.”

Well, I predicted that May was going to be the death rattle of DDO in conjunction to the rumors of things slowing up if the current team couldn't increase revenue. I was a couple months short but here it is. Black and white. So all that planning for the latest updates, the passes, the store sales was all just window dressing for one final cash grab. Nice way to go out. Just like the con jobs they chose to be.

Just someone confirm for me that Steelshit, Vagisil and Cordo-stain are finally out of a job and must now get their semen stained asses at the end of the unemployment line. These face fuckers and their personally assembled twink army are directly responsible for destroying the game in one year quicker than the 9 years it took to build it up.

In a sense I'm glad DDO is finally dead. It's just sad these sacks of shit made me feel that way and took it down with them.

Sad news indeed.
I think DDO/LOTRO still make money.  Their recent actions would support that.
They've just decided they can no longer be bothered and want to find something new to epicly fail at it.  Which they will so long as the current Turdbine mgmt remain, then any project is doomed to failure no matter how good the people they hire are.

Might be a chance of them selling DDO off now...

If Sev goes, then I will be happy.
The other guys at least have some use if DDO now goes into Maintenance Mode.
I have no doubt that the majority of the retrenchments are in the MMO workers and that all the Turdbine middle mgmt sails on through untouched.  Wonder if the "dream team" of the Paiz's will move to mobile development roles?

I do wonder if U32 will ever make it live now?
Do you guys think it's likely that the retrenchments will be immediate and anything currently being worked on will be abandoned?

It would be sadly ironic for the finally updated Cannith Crafting to fall at this last hurdle.   Sad

Anyway, this is not unexpected but still sad news nonetheless.

It's not visionary at all if all you do is post the same DOOM predictions over and over for over a year and when it finally feels like DOOM gloat about it.

It's like predicting that a stage 4 cancer patient is going to die Soon(TM)

Ah yes, let's move to the mobile F2P market after everyone else has already flooded it... yeah that market makes money, but I have no fucking clue how, I'd never spend a dime on a micro-transaction cellphone game.

I find it weird that they'd be slashing DDO's budget right before a big Dungeons and Dragons movie. Its like they are afraid of money.

Yeah.  I wouldn't either.  But others do, obivously.  Look at who is buying advertising during the super bowl.  Clash of clans, Game of War:Fire Age (with Kate Upton no less), Boom Boom Beach, that military strategy one with Arnold Schwarznegger.  Pretty much all of them are mobile games.  That kind of advertising budget doesn't come without a serious revenue stream.

We do appreciate folks' concerns about the well-being of the team; know that the team has read them.

As with previous business-related decision-making like this, we really can't comment on personnel changes. We would like to reiterate the part from yesterday's statement that DDO will continue operating as it is now. We'd add that no changes have been made to our development plans.

Seems hard to believe.  Where did they cut if not from the DDO and LoTRO development and support groups?  Bob from AccountTemps got fired?

I know, and it makes no damn sense. Unless you're guzzling store-bought potions, you can drop $60 on turbine points and play for months, just buying packs and little things here and there. Maybe $100 well-spent gets you the entire game, all races/classes/etc. Thousands of hours of gameplay and content.

Compare to: the $100 wagon of smurfberries that will keep you occupied for a few hours at most. How the fuck do people justify that?

Sure it makes sense... look around at the huge arse number of people with their faces glued to their cell phones....its a far bigger market than pc gaming regardless of how crappy the games.

Have TV ad costs plummeted in the US like over here, out of interest? Online video seems to be the hot shit here getting the money.

Bear in mind "continue operating as it is now" means very little. They have no pre-released firm update schedule to stick to. They could halve staff and double the length between updates, and it's still sort of technically true. I expect there are layoffs but it won't change their plans for the game.

And you can play anywhere in down time, no PC to boot, sit at, wait for internet etc. etc. It's all about convenience, that's why the market took off, they got to the lazy would-be gamers who didn't care enough to pay for dedicated hardware but have a phone and idle cash anyway.

Well that answers the question on whether or not he got the axe.  Though, I will say there is a difference between saying, "No DDO staff got axed" and "no changes will be made to our development plans."  You can make all the plans you want, even if you no longer have the staff necessary to properly design, code, and QC those plans in an timely fashion.

The USA is having so many disasters and tragedies you'd almost think it was built on thousands of ancient Indian burial grounds.

Talk about getting priorities fucked up. They lay off Turbine employees but keep cordo-cuck? I guess this is how they get that last dollar, and it's going towards not fixing old bugs, improving quality of the game and content but feeding his diabetic dependency to donuts and cola to wash it down. Turbine and WB logic being displayed in rare form here.

Oh why couldn't it have been the other way around???
