So, I'm not really someone who will sit down and crunch numbers (I really appreciate 5 foot Step's builds).

I do however know how to play the builds I "copy" (for the most part).

Since the nerf to Warlock was announced, I see tons of wailing and gnashing of teeth on the DDO forums about it.

The nerfs seem to all aim at the Auralock/Burst/Blast "build".

But for my 21 runs through Heroic for racial past lives (so far), I've tried all types of Warlocks.

What I'm finding is that Cone/Necro-instakill is the best in terms of completing quests fastest and killing everything.

I haven't really played Warlock in Epic content (I Favor the Tree builds). 

So is this whining actually legit.  Is the Aura/burst/Blast just that much better than Cone/Necro?

Is it a heroic vs Epic thing?

My first reaction is that the people whining have been playing warlock wrong... but maybe I'm missing something.

Cone / necrolock is vastly superior in every way except one - it requires a brain to use.

it requires more gear tho, so for some that's in issue if you aren't a serial TR'r and dont hoard leveling gear

maybe my Triple completionist is giving me more than I think in terms of DCs.

I just really use crafted gear (not even doing the 3rd slot for all the insightful stuff) and I'm easily holding my own in R3 to R5.  I can't imagine these whiners are doing anything close to R3.

completionist is giving you 2DC's from completionist feat and Wiz PL (assuming you burn those feats)

Plus another 3 Evo DC's from Sorc, 3 Conjuration DC's from Cleric, and a whopping +9 Spell pen from FvS and Wizard PL's.

so,

+5 Evo
+5 Conj
+ 9 Spell Pen

These are all very useful for a warlock. Crafted gear is a great equalizer for sure, but it still won't make up the difference the above PL's bring to the table.

How would you have done the warlock changes, to nerf heroic ES but not Epic? (Or whatever you think should have been done.)

I would have made the burst abilities cost a little sp (1-3 each) and added some damage spells so that you had a choice between using the cheaper burst abilities or the higher dps spells.

Indeed; in heroic I don't even use necro much.  Tentacles/Web + Cone >>> everything
else.  Which is why these changes are dumb.  It's taking the easy button (to some
extent) away from those that actually needed it.  It takes virtually no gear or PLs or
investment of any kind really to play an ES auralock at an effective level.  Take utterdark
and slot radiance sp/lore and that's it.  It's just going to hurt those casual players who
need the leg up.  Don't expect the 'nasty warlock saw my pee-pee' threads to diminish post
U36.  It'll just be nerf cone/tentacles instead of nerf ES blasting.

It just pisses me off that the crabs always get their way...

Yeah, I'm 99% solo so I'm generally doing R2/R3.  Just doing reaper for RTR XP grind
(or was I guess).  In higher skulls I mix in some suggestion/command undead on the
right type of champs.
