The problem with this is that they need to punish them in such a way that they don't quite the game entirely, otherwise removing portions of your player base is counter-intuitive. I know if I had my character deleted I'd uninstall and not look back - game ain't worth grinding from the beginning again.

If they had this policy from the start it wouldn't have been a problem.  The first exploit that happens:  You catch people and say "We can't roll back the impact of the exploit.  To preserve game integrity and economy, delete any/all characters we can determine benefited from the exploit."  Do that in 2006 and continue it and you have remarkably fewer people fucking around with exploits.   Those few that do are not players you really want anyways.  They aren't adding to the quality of your community, nor are they probably spending much money.  But more importantly, most of your customer base values their time investment in their characters more than the benefit of the exploit.

When you go with the soft 7 day ban but you get to keep the benefits of the exploit then you have the situation you have now.  Many more people looking for and using exploits.  The cost benefit analysis for most is that the benefits outweigh the costs.  So now, if you come down hard, you do risk having a more severe financial impact and a larger footprint of your overall customer base.

This is some bullshit. They would be 100% correct to permaban my whole account. I am negative value to them, even as a paying customer. Deleting only my characters is not harsh enough.

We will see what actually happens, though. No email for me yet, so I probably got worse than the 7 day vacation.

This is a fascinating portrait of an alternate reality. What happened in that universe when Single Window Fighting went live?

All true - the problem is they DIDN'T do that, and now they need to put more thought into player retention. Sweeping bans = bad for player retention.

If you are spending money and actively playing the game you are a positive value. At the very least you contribute to providing a positive game-play experience for others.  Everything else is just numbers in a database.

I'll never understand the propensity of people to brag about being good at a video game. Its a toy you play with for fun. The only person who should be proud of you is your mother. If you're 3.

What they should do is reset the character to level 1, remove all gear and past lives, and start them off with Exploiters Rags: Cursed Item, can only be removed with remove curse spell, -4 to all ability scores.
Alternatively, it could set all ability scores to 1, until removed - despite other equipment.

Honestly, it would be fucking hilarious and deserving.

I'm sure the players finding exploits are very good at the game.   And probably play a large quantity of hours.   They may even spend large quantities of money.   (But given how much pay to progress there is in the game, that seems unlikely)  Are you going to spend hours and hours trying to get the timing down on a saga exploit if you have 20 or 30 Otto's boxes in your inventory?  I can go from 1-20 on a racial life in about 70 minutes with an otto's box.  And, as you said, I'm not even that great a player.

Besides, with regard to spending, I was referring to 2006 in my post.  That was quite clear.   When you couldn't spend more than someone else.  It was just a sub and that's all.   Besides having multiple subs, I guess.

My point is that if you really want to get rid of exploiting, come down extra hard on anyone who exploits at the beginning.  And keep doing it and let the reputation spread.  Those initial exploiters who get caught will either keep doing it and suffering the consequences repeatedly, stop doing it (because there is little value in doing so) or they will leave for a game that is more lenient on exploiters (if their fun is more in trying to find the holes and game the system than actually play the game).   In any case the number of exploiters will stay small.  You won't get the wide spread impact/ripple effects you have in the current environment.

They could do it now.  Just announce a zero tolerance policy on it and execute it. (Technically there has always been a zero tolerance policy, it just isn't enforced that way usually)  Most exploiters aren't people who actively seek and find them or understand how they work.   They are just friends of friends or guildies of someone who hear about it through the grapevine.   The percentage of players engaging in the behavior will drop rapidly.

Bring back Tarrant.

The name of this year's anniversary hammer should have been, "Tarrant, Banhammer of Mabar".  It would have been a great laugh.

They can make the game fun again this way less people will try to exploit.

You are suck a bitch fanboy, just STFU.

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

Love,

People who don't know how to fix their own mistakes cleanly

You got an email?

Your  account has been suspended as a result of a  confirmed Player Code of Conduct violation.

This suspension is for 30 days .

Specifically, a Game Master determined that you exploited a known issue within the game's programming.

You can find more information regarding the associated policy at the following URL: https://www.ddo.com/en/dungeons-dragons-online-code-conduct-en
Our ultimate goal is to provide an appropriately safe, fun, and engaging experience for our entire player community. To that end, the Player Code of Conduct must be enforced.

If you have any information that you feel would alter the decision made in this action, please visit http://help.standingstonegames.com, and follow the links to the In-Game Support help page to submit your appeal. Note that all account actions are taken only after a significant amount of research and verification is performed to ensure proper Code of Conduct enforcement. I laugh at all the simps defending SSG's newfound banhammer powers to address a widespread exploit that has been around for years. It's too little, too late.  The integrity of DDO was destroyed years ago.

SSG can't even communicate in a timely manner to people they banned.  Instead, we see dozens of "failed to queue for server" threads on the mobo.  Obviously it's too high tech for them to send the clear and concise message "Your account has been banned. See email for details."
