Anyone who can stick around through all of Hamburger Lady by Throbbing Gristle after a night of psychedelic drugs is probably someone I can hang out with.

You're talking to someone who owns 10 Diamanda Galas albums.

Throbbing Gristle is the Anti-Enya. This would definitely keep me around. It's like if Sylvia Plath fronted The Legendary Pink Dots.

Grin

I was once asked by my then-14-year-old stepdaughter to make a cd of "scary music" for her Hallowe'en party..  It did not get played.

Prolly a good thing. It's just a creepier overall life if you're checking under the bed for an actual Yoko Ono.

Seriously, Rev, give it a shot if you haven't.

It's basically a choose-your-own creepypasta with multiple branches and a couple of endings.

Takes maybe three hours to play through.

Any other game recommendations, eighnuss?

I'm thinking about trying out Darkest Dungeon when I get back from a short vacation.  Maybe Hellblade, in keeping with the mental health theme.

i gotta keep my "reviews" rare and for special cases, its already hard enough to get people to take my posts seriously since they have never experienced disagreement. if i littered this forum with good game discussion, it would probably just further reduce the chances of the reader taking the recommendation to play seriously, when coupled with whatever inherent bias theyve attached to me for saying things they didnt like in another thread in another subforum. so, no, unfortunately i have no further recommendations at this time.

I did some reading and am pretty impressed. This guy is a tricksy programmer. I've never even heard of people making their executable freaking ascii art.

I'll check this out tonight.

Bored myself to tears until I decided to just skip all the bullshit. Then it got interesting. I seriously debated quarantine procedures... Grin

There's a lot of layers that I didn't explore. I'm glad others have though, so I can read about it.

This was my thought.  The teen poetry club stuff was mostly lame af.   But that's not my thing.   Might be more compelling you are a teenager who enjoys teen angsty stuff or, if you are over the age of 20,  have a pedo fetish for schoolgirl hentai.

But the game design with rewriting the executable and restarting the game with self aware characterization was ingenious.  As a developer, I found that to be innovative.   Wish they had found a more interesting game to build around it.

i think they chose the ideal platform. the game basically stood, to me, for everything i hate about internet culture, and i was extremely narrow minded toward anyone who recommended i play the game. i really thought it was exactly as you seem to describe- a creepy dating sim for nerds and virgins and weebs. i could not have been more negative about this game, due to what i perceived it as from its styling. only after being convinced to put my assumptions aside was i able to actually experience it. i felt that just coming to appreciate a thing you initially rejected due to stereotypes is a admirable aspect of the game, before you even consider the actual game. i enjoyed that i irrationally disliked this game until i actually knew what it was from experience. a great, reoccurring trend in life that is always good to reaffirm. u cant just assume everything you dont like or understand is bad.

also, yes, i wasnt trying to do all that investigation stuff either. once i became aware of the way the game was set up i was compelled to just go read about its secrets. im glad someone went through the trouble of decoding all those files.

The poetry had both range and character. From a poet's perspective, I can tell you the writing was both substantive and impressive. These might not be poems you can't live without, but poems you can't live without wouldn't have fit the characters. Instead, they wrote poems they could not live without. Similar to the artwork in the code, the quality of the art isn't what makes it most impressive. Its pitch-perfect appropriateness to the game is what makes it impressive. It adds extra layers of creepy. The coding helped support the genre-subversion, as did the "hentai" artwork, as did the writing. To me, even the premise behind the sub-game of "writing" your own poem was annoying and wrong, but wrong in the exact pitch-perfect way the game called for.

Every medium eventually matures, and one of the hallmarks of its maturity is that artists start to subvert the medium for their own, weird art. Video games have been, and still are, a combined medium. Developers usually call upon artists who are professionally established, competent, but basically average in their field. They do whatever is enough. This developer set out to create a work of integrated art. You are looking at a video game that pays attention to the details of each medium in its combination, and how they blend together. Other great video games have done this much. This one takes advantage of its combined media, but also some of the aspects that only a video game can deliver. You are looking at one of the still-early works that can establish video game as its own art form.

I agree with everything you wrote.   I'm a mid-40's married guy with 3 kids, a business, a house, etc.   I'm not the target audience for that game.  My 20 y/0 and 18 y/o teens probably are.   As such, it is not surprising that it wouldn't resonate with me.   I applaud them for selecting a target demographic and then designing to that spec wholly.

Had they tried to broaden the appeal it would have weakened the experience for everyone.

Bringing this back to DDO for a sec, that's one of the issues that they have.  They are trying to appeal to wide an audience.   Their original target was D&D PnP lovers.   But in "going MMO" they have ended up trying to serve many masters and pleasing none.

Games, movies, TV Shows, books, etc can really excel when they define and know the audience well and focus on delivering for that audience.
