You can often verify that someone is indeed an idiot when you hear them speak over voice chat for the same comments that you wouldn’t be sure about if they typed them out because you give them the benefit of the doubt.

Chat is useful when you remind the group not to complete because a part of the group is working on a side project of some 'sort' or other....

Unfortunately there's always that one ass-clown who HEARS it but isn't really paying attention and rushes for the completion anyways....

I prefer voice chat, too. It keeps people from typing shit in the text box where I might accidentally read it. It also means I don't have to type anything, because motherfuckers ain't got time to read when they're voice chatting. I can then turn the sound off, and it's almost like I'm soloing. I used to think I occasionally needed to say, "What?" and "Sorry, could you repeat that?" as I ignored the group leader. But it turns out, the text box eventually always asks, "do you have voice chat?" "No" is pretty easy to type. Then I can play my music without interruptions, and the text box only fills with important shit, which means it stays empty.

I'd be willing to bet the voice chat client was never coded by Turbine/SSG. It has its own server so I'd bet it's a 3rd party app.

Regardless, your main point that it's not very good is still valid.

If it's a 3rd party app, it's even less excusable that it's such shit.  If any of the vendors or suppliers I work with provided products or services with a quality like that, I kick them to the curb (and I have).

However, just because there's a separate server for the voice chat doesn't mean it wasn't done by Turbine.  It could just as easily mean they spun up a separate server for voice rather than pile it on top the sphagetti code already running on the world servers.  That would have been the smart thing to do.  Separating services like that lets you restart a particular service or even reboot that particular server without taking everything else offline.

The funny thing is, in theory, SSG should easily be able to roll their own TeamSpeak server and use the API to integrate it with the DDO client. - https://www.teamspeak.com/en/teamspeak3sdk.html

I am much better conversationalist than others. Sometimes, I am nice enough to allow others in the party so they can pick up a few tips and tricks when they converse with someone next.
