Quote:
A Look Ahead - 2019 Producer's Letter

Greetings! I’m excited today to share a look at our 2019 road map, featuring a new expansion, new quests, a new race, and more! DDO enters its 13th year with a passionate player base and a development team dedicated to making DDO great, and it couldn’t be done without you.

You've known about our plans for an expansion into Sharn for a while now, and last week we were able to start sharing more information with you, including the debut of our first Sharn-related preview material to our public preview server, and an announcement that we will begin accepting preorders for Masterminds of Sharn in March. Bookmark ddo.com/mastermindsofsharn to make sure you have the latest information.

We intend to follow up Sharn with a new adventure pack set in the City of Towers, but you won’t need the Sharn expansion to run these quests. Update 43’s adventure pack set will be free to VIPs (and Season Pass holders). Update 44 will introduce our next new class as well! More information about what this class will be is under wraps for now, but we will have much more to share later this year.

Update 45 will arrive later in the year as well, and feature our next classic adventure pack. We don’t feel it would B2 early to talk about it, so we’re pleased to announce that Keep on the Borderlands will offer a new experience for players adventuring at the lower levels of the game. The classic pack will also feature several other dungeons, similar to what we did with White Plume Mountain and Other Tales.

Some other things we are hoping to do this year is to work on Epic Destinies, with a few targeted changes per destiny along with additional work to Knight of the Chalice, and the debut of a new racial variant!

As always, we are honored to be the place where you enjoy the most authentic Dungeons & Dragons experience in video gaming, and we will continue to work hard to earn your patronage.

Sev~

There's a lot they can't talk about in specific terms legally speaking. I don't know if that comes from their licensing or Daybreak or some other legal matters, but they had to edit out any of the juicy stuff and give general ideas and figure out what they can actually talk about without getting into trouble each producer's letter.

It appears they decided AGAINST Isle of Dread or WOTC didn't let them do it.

It seems good to me. A new class always has me excited. I wish they would go crazy and just release a bunch of them at once. Charge for them all like League of Legends does. I will pay for new classes. Every time. I am sure most of us will. I have no clue what the new class might be, but I am sure someone here has extensive DnD knowledge to more accurately speculate what class this might be.

KotC update! Pally was left far behind from its days as the first class to get a pass. We have come a long way from that time in the game and pally is a great class to have. It is one of the best new player classes to build and play.

A new paper module directly ported to DDO? Yes plox! SSG's real talent is taking paper modules and making them amazing. They are batting a 1000 when it comes to porting those badboys over.

New racial variant, dwarfs possibly? Not as exiting as a new class, but we are going to have to settle on this one.

Epic Destiny adjustments... I am super stoked for that. Aren't you tired of being in LD and EA every single time, fam???

Also,, I generally agree with this.   The most fun is finding and creating builds.  In that regard, new races, new race variants, new classes, class pass revamps and changes to ED's are in a lot of ways as exciting or more exciting than actual new content.

Although I love me some B2, Keep on the Borderlands.   And with the caves that they have in that module, you could design a bunch of quests to fit a new explorer area and a cool keep as a base of operations.

Probably budget and staffing constraints. Sev said on stream that the art required for isle is expansion worthy. Having said that dinosaurs should feel epic, and I agree. To me that epic feeling comes from fighting large ugly monsters. MotU is one of my favorite settings because 20 foot tall demons from the abyss inside Lolth's domain is just dope. Wish that was somehow end game again. Isle would fill that niche for me.

Agreed.

If they did Isle of Dread as an expansion next year, that would be fucking awesome.

I'd rather they took more time and did it right.  I'll pay expansion prices for it.  Just build it so we can play it.

Keep on the Borderlands, that will be amazing! To be honest I don't know if its amazingness is pure nostalgia for my first experience (pun intended) playing or just the gravitas of going back to the start. I can't wait to see those caves of the unknown fully rendered and playable.

New class guesses based on information we have:

Psionic is obviously the last core class missing.

Cavalier would be another guess as they tried to make it previously, but unless we see a hireling change between now an U44 I doubt it based on the info we had for Cavalier.

While I'd guess Soulknife could be turned into a class. This still makes more sense as a Warlock or Psionic prestige.

That letter is incredibly weak given the wait...  Are we to assume that the new class and racial variants are still undetermined?  On the other hand, we are about to get Sharn which, if it is anywhere near as good as RL then that is a lot to bring out for this year and anything else is gravy.  There seem to be mixed signals, on the one hand, new expansion and an indication of everything going strong and on the other the letter doesn't really reflect what one would expect if SSG was in complete control and able to do what they wanted.  So, maybe things are touchy with WoC, or Daybreak is a problem... or Sev just doesn't know how to write a good producers letter.  Overall, I give the letter a B-

As far as the Isle of Dread is concerned, I'm glad it's getting shelved seemingly to be worked on more dedicated.

I am curious as to why there was no mention of Undermountain. With it being WoTC's current flavor of the month and Neverwinter getting Undermountain as their expansion this year, I'm sad to see we won't get it.

Then again it could be because DDO's Ravenloft was universally praised compared to Neverwinter's Ravenloft which was accused of being a P2W grindfest mess, more than the usual Neverwinter content.

Scrapped stuff; I can't recall where I picked it up.

But essentially the Cavalier was going to be your Knight archetype with the twist being you'd have a posse of 'pets'. You'd have a squire, an archer, and I think like a foot knight or some crap.

In theory it sounded cool to have a real pet focused class. But obviously with the Dumberling issues it's obvious why it got shelved.

I'm going to double down on the Psionic prediction.

My assumption for this is the new racial variant deal.

With obvious more HD human style modeling available now: IE, Aasimar and Tiefling. I'd take a wild guess and say we might finally get Kalashtar as a race in DDO.

Kalashtar would be a human variant with their racial tree removing the dragonmark stuff and instead being focused on Psionic bonuses.

It'd be perfect to debut the Kalashtar and Psionic class at once. Two birds with one stone from the Eberron player book.

Interesting. Sounds...plausible.

And the actual psionic class would be...Psion? Soulknife? Psychic Warrior? Wilder? Kineticist? Something else?

Do not try the patience of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocation of equations. These are the tools we employ, and we know many things.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

If I had to guess on the trees you mean?

Probably Soulknife to silence people like me that bitched about not getting melee warlocks like tabletop.

I'd imagine Wilder could pop up as well.

Last one would be a blaster-caster probably, not a DC based one. Unless they wanted to do some weird fear mage-ithilid style CCing bot with instakills based on fear effects.

Worst Blowjob ever.  Okay I think it is pretty obvious that someone's legal department took a huge red marker and redlined 50% to 75% of the original letter.    The question becomes which legal team, SSG, Daybreak, WotC, or Hasbro owns the red marker in question?   I have my guess....

Sure. If the adjustments don't wind up as some form of being in LD and EA every single time, just suckier.
