FF6 (or FF3 NA release)

So it's been 24 years since the game was released, but shit, it still holds up. On an emulator you can use "turbo mode" to speed through the leveling process.

I had never played it before but if you like (or liked) old school JRPGs then this game is a must play IMO.  The 16bit art is fucking great and the story is better than a lot of modern games.

If you want to have fun on an old FF game Four Job Fiesta is going until the end of August.

Makes going through FF5 very different and challenging especially if going for a low level run.

FF6 was a masterpiece. Also no other game lets you suplex a train.

FF7 always got more buzz and I have fond memories of it, but I think this is more because it was revolutionary to break the paradigm and move to 3d. Looking back the story has a lot of holes and the graphics don't hold up. (Though supposedly they are doing an HD remake now?)

Anyway, if you loved FF6, you'll like FF4 (FF2 NA release). There is also a remake of it that I can't vouch for, but looks lovely.

I'd recommend the GBA version for FF5. Closest to the original SNES version with additionnal content and an official translation. Also the ability to dash permanently as if you had a thief in party which turns into double dash speed WITH a thief in party. Huge QOL improvement there moving around is kinda slow otherwise.

As for FF4, if you prefer having an experience closer to the original JP version you can try the Namingway Edition ROM patch. Game was heavily modified in the NA edition and is missing a lot of character abilities. Difficulty was also changed and a bunch of other stuff. The patch pretty much does its best to restore everything as it was in the original.

Sadly was standard back then to do that it seems. Tons of games we got here were watered down versions of the JP games.

Only exception that comes to mind is 7th Saga where the game we got here is actually MUCH more difficult than JP.

7th Saga is one of the most frustrating video games ever. I would only recommend it to masochists.

There is a gold mine of classic 16 bit RPGs though. You should also check out the likes of Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star 4, and Secret of Mana if you haven't already.

Yeah NA version had issues. For some reason they lowered stat gain on level ups but other apprentices kept original values. You end up being pretty much permanently underpowered and have to grind levels endlessly but only works VS random encounters you still get fucked VS apprentices.

Elnard is perfectly fine though (JP version) and actually fun to play went through it a couple times recently. Romhacking.net I think it was has tons of patches available for stuff like that.

Agree on that era having great RPGs too. I’d add those to the list:
Tales of Phantasia
Lufia 1-2
Super Mario RPG
Mystic Ark
Terranigma
Secret of of Evermore
Seiken Densetsu 3
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Shadowrun SNES
Shadowrun GEN
Bahamut Lagoon
Shining Force 1-2
Front Mission
Earthbound
Arcana
Eye of the Beholder
Brain Lord
Dungeon Master
Breath of Fire1-2
Zelda alttp
Paladin’s Quest
Soul Blazer
Star Ocean

Came here to say this
Sabin is beast mode

yes they are making a remaster of FF 7 using the FF 15 engine.
IMO FF 15 is a fun game to play. Different in a good way.

Basically it's a cruise with your Bros in a bad ass car: the game

Ah yes, forgot about Gaia, did not mention Mana because it was previously posted. It does indeed very well deserve being mentionned though, first and best of the three.

Excellent description.

I didn't love it.  No emotional investment like I had with VII, IX or X.  But I enjoyed playing it.  Very relaxing!

So to start, I'm in NA so...

I originally started with the original ff. If you hate yourself, go play it. I tried restarting it a few years back and even though I loved the game, it's an absolute slog. I did finish it multiple times back in the day though. I don't know how I had the patience.

FF2 was probably my favorite, great game. I probably liked it best because it was such a step up from the original with the QOL improvements.

FF3 was also a great game. So much more to do than the previous 2. Back before having access to the internet, it was fun trying to find all the different cool and weird stuff you could win in the coliseum. Plus I loved how most characters had unique abilities. Fun stuff.

FFVII was so different than the rest that I found hit hard to really get into. It's the only one I started that I don't think I stuck with and finished. Although it being on a disk and loading time what it was might have played a roll in that. Although to be honest, I'm don't  distinctly recall loading time being a problem, but let's be real, it was PS1.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is basically a children's game. You can use Heal or cure(can't remember which)on the end boss(undead), and it would take all his hp and he'd die. Silliness.

If people are interested in oldschool JRPG's Dragon Quest is worth a spin too.

Best versions, I agree with this guys opinion, but with the caveat that the best version of DQ7 is an emulated 3DS. It's incredibly easy to get stuck on the PSX version, so much so that despite I actually prefer it, I can't recommend it in good faith.

I'm currently about 20hours into Octopath Traveler which is turning out to be a fantastic throw back to the SNES JRPG era.

Chrono Trigger

I had a random thought about this thread and couldn't remember seeing this here. But yeah, Chrono Trigger is decent.
