I've been distro hopping around linux for a while, and each new one I try, I see how it runs DDO. Haven't had much luck, with the exception of Zorin OS, but even that was iffy, and I didnt like Zorin as an OS. So just wonderi ngif any of y'all use linux or game on it and if you've had any luck.

Yeah I dual boot, use windows for gaming and Linux for everything else. Not a fan of Windows.

I use Mint 19.2 and it's great, better than my Windows laptop. It's a pretty beefy system, not sure how an older machine might run, but Mint 19.2 Cinnamon 64 bit with PlayOnLinux rocks DDO. You need PyLotRO and copying the install directory from a running Windows install helps.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Slackware 2.2, baby!

That's interesting. I couldn't get DDO to run very well on mint, and overall, didn't like mint very much.

PlayOnLinux is key, the default Wine with Mint is hot steaming crap, PoL lets you use a newer version with little effort.

It depends on what you want to do with it, Mint's a decent consumer grade distro but you're not going to get the performance you would out of a techier distro.

but try Play on Linux on whatever distro you like, use a newer Wine version, and give it a spin. It's way easier than trying to compile from source a newer wine for just about any distro, you could be up and running in half an hour, and and if it sucks, no big deal.

And like I said, mine's a pretty beefy rig, so maybe it won't run well for everyone. I'm just saying what I use and that I'm happy with it.

Good luck, and if you want me to look up which version of wine I'm using say, but I've generally found any new-ish version works well.

Ive been looking into Manjaro. It looks nice. I booted to a live version on USB and liked what I saw, and it seems to be a good gaming distro. I also found a youtube guide to specing it for gaming, so I may give that a try this weekend. Thanks for the advice! If I need more details, I'll definitely let you know!

I've actually been trying to get DDO installed on a Ubuntu box recently. Its not my main system, just one I built so I could learn the ropes on linux. I'll give PlayOnLinux a try, wine has turned into a gigantic headache(oweing mostly to pisspoor documentation - seriously, you linux-types want to know what makes switching over so hard? All your "guides" say "just do this!" without any indication of HOW.).

Take a look at using Lutris for installing it. It has scripts for doing the standalone versions and one via Steam. That is a great way to install lots of Windows games under linux

I won't touch steam with a 10 foot pool. Fuck steam. In the ass. With a serrated blade. If DDO requires steam to play, I won't play DDO.

My biggest headache is the guides like the one on winehq have helpful things like "check and make sure you have 32-bit Mesa libs and 32-bit Samba libs installed" and then provide zero hints as to how to actually DO that. I'll take a look at Lutris and see if that's any easier.

But yeah, if you're ever writing a basic linux how-to guide, be specific. Don't assume the guy reading it is already a linux expert. This is the number-one reason why linux is so unapproachable. The Raspberry Pi community is actually making great strides; in fact it was a series of pi projects that gave me the confidence to fire up a fullblown linux desktop. The commands make sense when you learn them, but you can't learn them if no guide provides them.

You must be the ultimate compromise.

It would be very interesting if DnD became Steam Dependent, or moreso all d20 systems, and DDO and Neverwinter and any other worthy simulator of DnD.

It's like pulling the plug on the heartbeat machine and saying goodbye to you.

Then again, the game wouldn't be compromised anymore.
