I’d check in for any updates with FFS before running them, but it’s a good list to go through if you’re looking for ideas.

Wow. That's crazy. For the entirety of the time I played the game, the only good ranged option was a bow, and that was only for the 3 or whatever seconds that manyshit lasted. I didn't think ranged would ever become viable.

Melee still does more dps in THEORY. But, in practice, ranged can often apply more actual damage to a particular mob AND stay safer in the process. The top ranged builds are certainly viable. They aren't necessarily tier 1 damage (except in fury bursts), but they are solid tier 1.5-2 sustained in Shiradi (imo).

Hey, thanks! I am not a big fan of casters, prefer ranged and melee. For now, I will probably focus on some reincarnations.

I will be getting one expansion, so Sharn is better then the other choices? I have everything up to Temple of elemental evil, my char used to be completionst (pre warlock).

When I reach epics, is it better to go bows with Shiradi or LD? Have all epic destinies maxxed

Sounds like you want to play a bow build. I'm sure Arcane archer will still work fine in elite difficulty. Either a Rogue Mech or an Inquis. is easier and better. But, if you're stuck on bow, some version of Monksher is probably best overall bow option. But, play what you want.

Sharn will help you the most as an expansion. It's also played the most still even if Feywild is newest. Maybe that will change. But, overall, the Sharn ranged gear is better anyway. You'll want the Wall Watch item set (Armor, gloves, and helm) for the set bonus. Build around that. Focus on getting the heroic set first since it will help with the widest range of content.

BTW, He missed Ravenloft. It was the best expansion in terms of fun, feel, and gear (at the time). But now the gear is overshadowed by Sharn/Feywild.

The one thing that sucks is you won't have the easy weapon and sentient jewel. Sentient weapons (+ artifact) and filligrees is a whole new grind, and it makes a significant difference. Although, generally, that's for level 20+. So, if you're working on heroic and racial lives, it's not important for now.

If you don't know, you make and eligible lvl 20+ (usually) weapon "sentient" by slotting it with a jewel. Then you can add XP to the jewel by feeding it trash named items. You unlock "slots" in your weapon into which you can add upgrade "filigrees" of all kinds that have individual bonuses and set bonuses. At end game, there's a lot of power to be unlocked through your sentient weapon, filigrees, and artifact (special named item that comes in various slots that can be slotted with 1-3 filigrees).

Sounds like the easiest start is to buy Sharn and start getting that ranged gear.

I just starting messing around with an older lv 30 alt that had been reset some updates ago.  I sent arcane archer and deep wood stalker and he hits for 600-1000 on EE and has about 300 ranger power a lot of haste and a lot of double shot.  I gave him the new bow with runes from Demigod raid but not sure how much better it is than his myth 4 sharn bow.  He is 20 ranger 10 shiradi.  Puts out steady dps but you couple go fury of the wild for massive burst and crits. Anyway a bow build and not sure how it stacks up agains others.  He has about 12 epic lives.

Which sharn bow? just the basic one you pick up in the wilderness with the sentient jewel? Is this guy first life no tomes?

I wonder what the meta will be once they do the bow enhancement tree.  6 ranger for all the ranged feats you get for free,  but then what, and will it be wis based or dex / str based.

I'm guessing DEX because of Improved Weapon Finesse in the DWS tree.

Yeah and having high reflex saves + evasion on a ranged build is nice.

But, wis with 10k stars might be pretty good again.

Fucking this.

I'm messing around leveling as a Paladin and I kind of hate it. I'm going to give it a fair shake (level to 30 the real way and then run at least 1x most end game quests) because maybe the problem is that I just suck at melee and can get better. I predict that the problem is actually a combination of 1) I suck at melee and 2) oh shit, you mean I have to run over there to kill them and I can't do it from across the room? Ugh, fine. and 3) keeping everything in front of me to hit it with a sword is legitimately harder than keeping it in front of me to hit it with a fireball/meteor swarm/multivial/bow/thrown weapon.

It's true. Being GOOD at melee is actually work--mainly due to chasing and all the work to mitigate high-level damage.

Why bother?   Cheesy

My favorite part of running pally was actually clearing packs:

1. Direcharge into pack
2. Delete 2-3 with Holy Retribution
3. Swing away with THF with 200-300% strikethrough

Actual single-target dps is good but not great.

Holy Retribution in particular just felt satisfying.

I think what made me rage-quite was the fucking boss in Rosemary's Ballad. I tried to do it on EE with a pretty well tricked out lvl 30 bladeforged paladin. First life, no tomes, ok. That motherfucking boss spams a close-range long-duration stun effect, so as a melee I needed either unreachable(for the character) saves or a very rare Soundproof item. There's no "playing around it", there's no "having enough skill to overcome it" its simple "if you don't have soundproof, you die"

....buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.................

any jank-ass ranged/spellcaster can take on the exact same boss easy as taking a shit, just by virtue of being further away.

Great design esthetic, that.

As has been mentioned, going from 26-30 can be done quickly. Roll elite when soloing until you have earned some reaper points and have geared up. Jump in whatever groups you find. You could run GH for saga if you haven’t yet. Then Lords of Dust, Sharn 1, Cogs, Sharn 2 for sagas, then Sharn 3 and Vale until cap. If you need Coin Lord favor and want XP, run Inspired Quarter and Dreaming Dark.

For epics, there’s so many ways to go, but most groups run reapers and will take anyone who applies. Since you are ranged, you can kite away from danger easier until you are better setup.

Gear wise work on Sharn sets for now. Heroic can carry you pretty far. Legendary Sharn at 29. Legendary green steel at 26 and Slavelords at 28.

Later, you can work on heroic Slavelords for level 8, Ravenloft at 10, White Plume quests have both level 6 and 9 gear, and Disciples of Rage at 14. Level 15 is Sharn and level 17 Sharn Docks.

Join PUGs and get carried through all the tasty reaper quests until you have enough reaper points to pay it forward.

If you are on Khyber or want to know more feel free to send me a message.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how the tree looks. I am hoping it'll make a Wis Monkcher variant fun again, one of my favourite times was playing the 12Mnk/6Rgr/2___ template.

I can't update that list post (edit function is borked forum-wide), so some of those links point to earlier versions that will have revisions farther down the thread, and there's a few new threads that I would have added to the list.

I'll have to copy paste the info into a new thread each time I want to update it from now on.

Don't give up on Barbarian THF for levelling. It's extremely strong and does help to make you a better player while levelling. Buy pots.

If I had +33-34% Armor Piercing from an item other than the bow slot, I'd go for Aerania (the new bow from the raid). If I didn't, I'd stick with Legendary Twisted Willow.

Sentient jewels drop often enough in White Plume Mountain that I end up liking WPM for gear better than Ravenloft even though I think Ravenloft is the most fun of any expansion they've made ever.

WPM is why my alt accounts get to have sentient gear.
