I haven't seen them do a "pass" in a while. Some items you have to take and trade in. But yeah, it sucks. I kind of really wanna buy salt marsh but I've had so little time to play...

There's a smidge more nuance than that.

If the alteration was a buff or a redesign, they categorically left it alone so people could keep the old version for whatever reason. This usually helped almost nobody, save for oddball collectors, but was useful in the instance of stuff like the HEVDEVI ring from Sands.

DDO's always made a change mandatory if the change is a nerf. So why are you acting like this is new behavior?

I guess it feels like new behavior because I've been playing for 10+ years and to me it IS new behavior. For the longest time they categorically stated that retroactively changing gear was impossible(be it buffs, nerfs, anything). Now(as in within the last few years) they are suddenly doing it All. The. Fucking. Time.

This is a situation where the poor bastards at SSG really can't win. They fucked up and made the new loot way better than the old. This is not new, this fuckup started pretty much with MOTU. Ever since then its been a constant stream of new expansion = better loot. And since DDO offers 0 options for lateral growth, thats the only way they can sell new packs.

Finally, FINALLY, after years of this crap it has bitten them in the ass hard enough that they said "ok, lets flatten out the loot". And everyone hates them for it. Its bait and switch, but they had no other option, they literally designed themselves into a corner.

Remember 31 is supposed to be the "legendary" levels or whatever(I seriously don't give enough fucks to go check), so we are probably looking at the same +22s we were getting before the Great Nerfing. And dont forget they will be parts of a 3-5 piece set that makes re-reaging the joy that it is in DDO. Half of those pieces will have stuff you don't need on them and the other half will have you popping pills to try to calm your nerves as you sift through your excel sheet trying to re-gear.

I would fully expect the best piece to be in a quest where you have to guide rats through a jumping puzzle with air jets and target levers while searching for random crests that are stuck in a wall 80% of the time.

I know many say the changes are better for the game but I feel weaker.  And I feel like I’m getting one shot more in r10’s again like I did before I got 120 rp and all lives and gear and all that shit.  So that I don’t like so much.  I have no science to back it up, just something I notice frequency-wise.

Nobody farmed RtSO ad nauseum to reslot everything for a few +1s. That is how we got massive power creep in Ravenloft in the first place.

That was the goal of the nerf. Too many people on the motherboards were complaining that R10 "wasn't hard enough". Actually the nerf was jsut all over the map, but that had a lot to do with it.

The funny thing is that they know about lateral loot design. When I was on the players council before Slavers came out I argued until I was red in the face about this exact issue.

I ended up leaking to my friends that epic giant old helms would no longer have the highest insightful bonus. (They were worth an absurd number of shards at the time so that they were worth selling.) Apparently someone snitched on me.

This was back when they did loot templating which is actually the answer to your previous question as to why they can now retroactively change everything. They did a loot 2.0 pass after Sev came on the team which allowed them to more easily generate loot; however in discussing Loot 2.0 it was very obvious that they were only going to go up.

There's really no room for custom effects at Ssg and that has been obvious since epic 3 barrel cove came out.

What is interesting is the game like path of exile which has effectively "solved loot." Player power logarithmically decreases as it approaches a limit.

That said even with path of exiles really intelligent loot design---they run into power creep issues when they introduce systems it allow for different types of crafting that make other types of crafting obsolete.

So the "meta" then is about effectively using resources efficiently. Players are always optimizing. Human beings by their nature are optimizers.

Path of exile has the correct design philosophy of giving the players a bunch of tools that do not have easy solutions so that the community can solve the problem together. They don't provide answers they provide questions.

DDO started providing answers when it engaged in vertical loot design. You can't avoid vertical system design but you can avoid vertical loot design.

SSG has a remarkable talent in the ability to be told something to their face but still absolutely not hear it. Its actually really impressive sometimes.

The only real problem here is DDO is not POE. POE really isn't designed for you to keep playing the same character forever, the idea is that you will max out, get bored, and start a new one. DDO is premised on the concept of building 1 character and goingon a life-long journey that has no end(or at least pauses for a while until they introduce a new TR mechanic).

But you're right about the problems with loot design.

Its really the lack of any sort of lateral expansion at all that tears me. There's literally nothing to do in DDO besides advance your character. Or get creative.
