Sorc Savants

I'm looking into sorc builds.  I've never played one, and have no clue.  Weeding through the abortion that is the class forums is painful, so hopefully my fellow vaulties can help me out.

Basics:
- Part of my completionist project, 20 then TR.  Does not need to be epic capable.
- Likely to go human.  I like my skill points, and an extra feat is nice.
- 36 point -- past lives: Rogue, Fighter, Wizard, Paladin
- Plan to max Cha, 14-16 Con, then balance of points in Str and Int
- Generally want to do direct damage with some CC and limited insta-kill.
- I don't mind some build flavor as long as its functional.

Semi-static group with:
- Drow Wiz/Rogue
- Ranger
- TBD (DPS Melee)
- Healer of some sort

Need advice on:
- Feat selection
- Enhancment lines
- Savant overview -- What is awesome, what is pretty-good, what should be avoided like the plague.

The really crappy thing is that Ron's character planner is blocked at work.  Both the online version and the download.  Grrr.

Rumored healer might be a halfling fvs with monk spalsh

Ok Quick thoughts

Starting scores
STR: 12
DEX: 8 (may godh have a spaz fit)
CON: 16
INT: 14 (you said you like skill points)
WIS: 8
CHA: 18

All level ups to CHA

Skills : max UMD and Concentration (might forgo quicken), Spot for seeing hidden baddies, balance and jump.

Enhancements: Human Versatility to help UMD, Savant line, Toughness, Energy of dragonblood, Fill rest for flavor.

What I've seen on Savant Lines: Good = Air/Cold  Meh = Acid/Fire

Feats: Empower/Toughness/Maximize/Heighten are musts, Extend/Quicken/SF UMD/Spell Pen/Greater Spell Pen all can help in some way. Extend was nerfed a little, I still like my long displace and haste. Enlarge is now about useless.

Knowing your healer I highly recommend HIGH UMD! Roll Eyes

No question air/water rule end game (raids esp.) but while leveling up I'd probably go with fire or earth and switch over around lvl 14 or so.

If this character is to be a race to 20, I would suggest the following:

Race:WF

Maximize, Empower, Spell Focus (I forgot you will need a focus eventually) as your 1st 3 feats - as soon as you get your SLA at 6 it turns you into a death machine

Go fire savant until you start running Vale quests, with acid as your secondary.  At that point change to lightning or ice, whichever tickles your fancy more.  Ice gets better single-target damage, lightning gets better AOE.  (Although between Otilukes Sphere and Cone of Cold I never am found wanting for AOE on ice personally).

You will clean up any and all quests especially if you have damage-boosting clickies.  I don't suggest ice for low levels because skellies suck when you are ice-specced.

My suggested feat order:

1)maximize
3)empower
6)Spell Focus (Evo or Conj - I prefer Conj for web and Niac)
9)heighten
12)quicken (this is when you get Reconstruct, what awesome timing!)
15)toughness
18)Your choice - spell pen or spell focus

I did the WF thing on my wizard life, and after splashing 2 rogue for evasion/traps it just killed the character from the Vale on.  Up to 16 was awesome, but those last few levels were painful.  Makes me nervous about giving up the charisma and DC's.  I know losing self healing is a big deal, but if I die I can blame Flint.

From what I have seen so far, I'm kind of tempted to do earth to 14/vale then cold.

You were warned, MAX UMD for self healing.

I will not be blamed when you flame-out.

Straight 20 WF sorc nuker you don't have to worry about DCs.  Most monsters' reflex saves suck, and with quickened reconstruct you don't have to worry about your own saves nearly as much.  Since you shouldn't splash rogue on a sorc anyway, just stay pure.  The extra dice of damage and spell pen when needed should carry you through even Amrath with little to no problem.

Hmm, I'll play with the numbers a bit and see how it comes out.  I'm still in CC mode aren't I -- DC is everything.

It's a completely different world, between nuker and CC.  I play both, but I find nuker more fun.

Even with a Nuking build, hard to pass up the Wizard past life feat.

I'd fit that in somewhere if it was me.

If you have it, it's an awesome choice for that last feat.  You can also play with feat order if you want.

Ink, a suggestion for planning at work, which I was doing earlier while waiting for some major changes to a project I'm working on.

Download the latest edition, toss it on a thumb drive, extract it to the computer, then unzip it and it should work fine for you. Hope that makes sense.

Here is a first pass in more detail.  I really don't know much about spell choice.  I'm afraid I've got a lot of nuking spells in there that I won't use since others that are more effective will be off cooldown.  Maybe I should swap in some utility spells?  Like Knock?

Any suggestions are welcome, as always.

Well, my first Sorc is a TR'd Halfling FvS.

I went with a WF Sorc and Fire savant with some lightning/force.

So far, it's just too easy, but the Burning Hand's SLA is useless when you have 6sp Scorch, and a 15sp Fireball clears a room or at most 2 fireballs and a scorch.

I took maximize early tihnking I would need it (like when I leveled my Wizard) but the cheap spells combined with the Sorc cooldown is insane so far.

Nuking is fun, but you still need DC's so they don't save too often. The speed at which you can nuke makes it more efficient than insta kills at this level anyway.

I took PK when I hit 9, but I will swap it out as nuking is just so much faster/easier.

Just watch the traps with a dumped dex on elite (same here).

I can't wait to hit Desert then GH, it's a lot of fun.

No matter hwat anyone says, fire is the best for leveling.  Especially if you are a master of red alerting quests.  Also, you don't need a reflex save for traps.  Sorcs have a spell, at level one, it is called jump.  I recommend you get it.  It is the Bees Knees.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

After much internal struggle, I'll let extend spell go.  It kills me, it really does.  Having a wizard in our semi-static group will help with that anyway.

The spell suggestions look good too.

I plan on TR'ing the weekend after next, but I think Flint and Havakare are going to explode if I don't hurry up.  So it might be sooner.  Three of the five of us are capped, one has 40k to go, and I'm DFL at 114k to go.  Cue the slow clap...

I like an Con Op +45 HP and any single shard SP (Triple Positive w/ Charisma skills) with a good clickie both in goggles .  Buff with the SP goggles switch to the Con Op's and go.

The only weapons I would be interested in would be Cold Absorption for ToD or Fire Absorption.
