note : I don't own a car, it's a waste of money, as I work 10 minutes away from home walking I don't need it. In my work I regularly have a company car, I (ab)use it to go to the supermarket to fill the fridge until next time I have said company car.
When I really need a car ( to go in vacation where train is not a viable option [read where it would take me more than 4 hours in train or if the TGV ticket costs as much as renting a car] ) I rent one. All in all it costs me less to rent a car for the 4 weeks in a year that I need one than to have one.

Yes, renting is much cheaper in all ways than buying. Here in Germany you have also to changes for winter tires, summer tires, taxes...
Actually was all quite cheap: 80€ for the car the whole weekend, 70 € the hotel, 80€ the gasoline, 60€ restaurant, but when you add all up it is 290 € for the weekend...
And I went to that "friends meeting" just to convince myself that I am not an asocial psychotic bastard. But I have the feeling I would have had more fun playing DDO, or reading a book or going to a movie. Or having sex with an underage FBI lawyer...or what was exactly that, pope?
