Stones of Experience - holding level 15 (or below)

So I've seen a dev comment that you shouldn't hold level 15 but I'm wondering if rather than a doomsday bug which can wipe all your experience that it isn't something along the lines of being able to hold more than 1 levels worth of XP (which is required to make the stones work).

Anyone brave enough to do any testing?

For shits and giggles I used the stone on the first character I created when I started playing DDO. After all this time he was still only level 11 due to being severely gimpy.

Of course, I didn't realize HOW gimpy until I tried to cast one of my new spells.

13 Wis on a Favored Soul doesn't work too well for those higher level spells. Tongue (Thanks, guy that helped me build that character in the first place!)

So come friday I'll be purchasing a heart of wood and re-rolling him back up to 16. I intend to hold at 15 so I can get exp from sands, so I'll be checking out that route of things.

I assume, however, that since it's a heart AFTER the stone of experience, that everything should be fine, though.

I guess the real question is whether the stone can somehow be leveraged to hold more than 1 levels worth of XP.

Why bother holding 15?

You can still get craploads of XP even from level 8 quests because of the +80% first-time-elite bonus and all of the other add-ins.

And they should also be blazingly fast completions, as well.

Sands s/r/e exp stops at 15. That's a boatload of xp and I tend to make a metric fuckton of sands runs on alts trying to get a ring and another blood stone.

Thought it was a -% penalty, not a flat out "You get 0 XP" UNLESS you are correct level, and someone is over level. As long as everyone, or no one, is over level you'll still get xp.

Also the only s/r/e xp I get from most places is what I get from running to quest entrances. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

16 = over level for sands.

Final reward for each of the three slayers is 28,265 xp.
The undead portion at least is not really that hard to rack up in pursuit of loot. It's only about 60 chest runs, give or take depending on your path.

At one level over the explorer area it's -50% and gets a larger -% each level after that.  So really it is diminishing returns to run for xp in an explorer when you are over level.

Holding at 15 also lets you do all the GH walkups with elite streak/bravery bonus.  Nothing to sneeze at.

Someone try it and let us know how this works.

Well really all I need to do is hit 18, then it's Vale and Challenges to cap. So I don't need streak from GH walkups. The 80% first time + 25(?)% from greater learning tome + 5% cloak/voice + 4% guild +30% pot = still plenty of XP. Yes, I run 30% pots on big XP stuff (GH/Necro4/Vale/Challenges)

It's probably fine...  I just don't have experience not having a level banked at 16.   Essentially, I'd be starting all the level 14 quests on elite at one level lower than normal.

I can get better XP per minute farming buying time than doing slayers.

Yeah, I can see doing the first run through Desert for XP... that's pretty good per minute.

But to get the 3000 Undead means about 30 runs just in the undead area.

That is at least 20-30 minutes per run (if you get all the undead you can).

This is not an efficient way to get XP if you are trying to cap a TR in the least amount of time.

Especially if you start this at level 15 and don't leave until you have 3000 on each side.

The thought of that makes me want to stick a pickle fork in my eye.

This is what the stones are for... so they can sell more Lesser woods as well as anyone who can actually make it to 20 as a gimp and get the True Woody.  Brillant job Turbine bean counters!

I've been meaning to buy a greater for this guy for over a year anyway. He's the only 28 pointer I have.

I hate challenges.

Also, if I'm going to be making that many sands runs for nothing, the slayer experience mitigates the utter heart-rending despair at the fact that I keep coming back empty handed every 5 minutes.

People who farm slayers should be executed.  Farm a quest.  Since desert is being discussed... Take the two tomb quests next to raiyum for example.  They take 1~2 mins to complete.  Far more xp in 20 mins then you will get farming slayers.  Suicide is the recommended course of action.

I've heard talk of holding 8 until capped near 10 before using the stone.

Why would you farm rings? Just buy them off the AH or trade for them.  Why waste time?

I got ninja stoned last night by some cocksucker. Leveled to 15 with it so I could BB the GH sides and get my argo favor easier. Hard capped with 16 banked and took my level no problem. I now have level 17 banked and about to hit Necro 4. Two other guildies reported the same thing.

SS rings? They sell on Khyber for 300k  Huh

Edit: not to mention they're basically useless unless you're an arti (meh) and/or have the pieces for an epic one (in which case plat should be the least of your concerns)

OK, back to wowo’s question. (With a theoretical scenario.)

I get a character to level 8, hit him with a stone and he has the XP needed to take level 16.  However, I only level him to 11 and go farm the hell out of Shadow Crypt.  Will all that XP go into the crapper or will it get added to my XP total?  And how far will it go?
