Since Turbine is selling those Awareness Ribbons for 100tp, does anyone see that as a little slimy? There is nothing about where the ones purchased with TP would cause a donation.

Yah but they are also selling them for 100tp and not saying what will be done with the money.

I had a bad feeling about that when I saw that. If you're collecting for charity you need to be very upfront about what % of the money is going to charity and where it's going. I haven't seen anything yet to indicate that.

Since they said nothing, I think we can assume they are keeping 100% of the money for WB corporation, which has two headquarters, neither of which is even in Boston.

Honestly I thought selling "Buttons of winning" for real money, advertising it as a joke but still continuing to take people cash a month after April fools day was about as low as they could go, but Turbine never fails to amaze me with their sleaze, incompetence, or outright greed.

I'm not sure if it's slimy or not - but holy hell is Turbine via Mouthpiece Jerry being evasive on the topic.

While part of me is proud of Turbine for stepping up about a tragedy in their backyard which I am really shocked some people are being so against them showing in game.

I do think the way this is being handled is a PR nightmare. I mean seriously had a draft of this for an article all ready to go (after deleting 3 very vehement anti Turbine articles from the last few days sigh) and then when I go to get more details I find I cannot print what I drafted because it would not be the truth.

Even if Turbine is (and I have no doubt they are) donating to the fund. I cannot report that these ribbons are a direct tie in, especially since it has been stated they cannot do it that way.

So even if you do buy them at 100 tp (which for many of us isn't that much at all) the lack of guarantee that that purchase directly goes to the fund is disturbing no matter how you spin it.  It is stuff like this that makes my job freaking frustrating. And is probably why I am snapping at people so easily today Sad

I have no problem with the in game memorial. None at all. I do have a problem with them selling the awareness ribbons for TP and it not being tied to a donation in anyway. It doesn't pass the gut test.

Because I can only get so many through before my editor has a cow lol. She has already suggested new mmo's for me to play (suggested meaning telling me Kal you need to distance yourself from DDO they are stressing you into an early grave).

So believe me its more of a I want to keep my job now than I don't want to let people know how badly Turbine is fucking up.

Their communication is a nightmare.  Some ass clown called them down on it, and Jerry stated that they posted it all over social media and their broke ass site.  Should be clear and crystal.  Yeah, right.  Sad

Company I used to work for did a yearly dollar donation thing: Put your name on the little piece of paper and we'll hang it up blah blah.

Here's the behind the scenes:

1. Take ppls money.
2. Give SOME to charity.
3. Keep rest for "administration compensation"
4. Write all of it off on your taxes.
5. Profit?

Seriously, a for-profit company using YOUR money so THEY can get tax write-off. That's what I see. Shady and lame imo.

In light of that, I'm questioning Turbine motives.

A half-dozen boss Vaulties donated generously with real money to my classroom during a fundraiser in May 2015 to get poor kids books to read. I won't forget that. They know who they are, and they freaking rule.

I'm starting to think that what I think may be slimy or not is probably irrelevant.

I'm thinking it may come down to if One Fund thinks that this is slimy...

Um look I am not sure where you were going with this, but pro turbine me?

No im pro not losing my job which helps pay my bills so I try to be as balanced as possible. I give Turbine (especially ddo) both good and not so good press because I like being balanced, but also because I like trying to keep the name spread as much as I can.

The last few months though its been very hard to see the game developers and the powers that be in anything but a negative light. Ive already did a couple of recent write ups about Turbine's and Biowares horrible decisions in the name of security, and an honest review of update 17 which I thought sucked big time.

So yeah not getting what your point was but since its my job to write for Turbine and they send me press info (mostly for lotro bleh) I want to try to tread a balance of getting info out and not losing work.

You just know that some accountant at Turbine said "Listen, we need to do an analysis on the TP's being donated.  If the user didn't purchase the points right before the donation, then we can assume that no money was spent by the user specifically for this cause and thus, we don't owe anything to the charity and we win by reducing the TP pool. Brilliant!"

The profiteering really exploded after WB took over. Being taken over by a ruthless megalomaniacal corporation involves a stringent sales quota. Wouldn't surprise me if the ribbons were just a small part of that.

"Here you go, free ribbons for you with this coupon. But, just in case you are too dumb to read, we reserve the right to fuck you over."

Because only LWGG can organize these types of events.  Wink

I would have posted something similar to what uurlockygmeov posted:  I play games to escape this stuff.

Still, it hit close to home for them and I don't fault them for wanting to support; I just fault them for how they will donate a "fixed amount". I do see the coupon to get it for free when you put it in your cart. I don't see one where you spend extra TP and it goes to the fund.

If this happened anywhere else, The old Turbine would have sold us some kinda pipebomb we could plant from the store. Remember the Hurricane Irene store shenanigans?
