14% drop in WoW playerbase
May 10th, 2013 at 4:07am
Print Post
1.3million players - 14% of the playerbase - left WoW in the first quarter of this year.  I don't so much care about the fact that they left, I just wanna know where they ended up, so I can avoid it...

So it is possible to know what happens with WoW but not with DDO suscribers.
Is that different policies from turdbine / Blizzard or is there something that I am missing?

Activision Blizzard made the announcement in the first 2013 quarterly report to investors, and WoW is big money for them; online game subscriptions made up 21% of AB's net revenue for the first quarter (although of course WoW is only part of that).  They mention significant changes in subscriber numbers because it has a significant impact on revenue and is therefore something they're beholden to tell investors.

By contrast, Turbine is such a small subsidiary of WB that it gets only the briefest mention in WB's 2012 Annual Report, with the only product release mentioned by name being the Riders of Rohan expansion for LotRO.  Bear in mind that WB - itself just a division of Time Warner - posted first-quarter revenues of $2.7 BILLION.

Time Warner > Warner Bros. > WB Home Entertainment > WB Interactive Entertainment > Turbine: that's how far down the give-a-shit scale DDO subscriber numbers live  Wink

Frankly, you could asplodify the good ship Turbine and all who sail in her and it wouldn't amount to a rounding error on WB's books.

Consider that WB bought Turbine with pocket money just because they ( Turbine ) had the MMO license for Middle Earth, and they wanted to integrate it with all the other licenses they ( WB ) had around Middle Earth.

DDo just came with the Bride.

Also, before they were bought by WB, they were private, so no need to share the info

I think TW just see Turbine as a source of revenue with no reason to invest further. Just wring what is already in place dry.

Possibly, although I honestly doubt it.  They've undoubtedly invested significant sums on further development and on expanding the franchise to include Faerun.  For an organisation of WB's size, having somewhere to dump a little cash to amortize profits can be a blessing even if they don't care enough about it to see that it makes money.

They apparently added Kung Fu Pandas.  If that's not a "jump the shark" moment, I'm not sure what is.  Add in that the subscriber model is pretty dead, it's not that surprising.

The Pandas are like making cows a playable class in Diablo.  Don't make no damn sense.

Look, it's simple.  If you don't have a 'coon skin to make your hat from, but Buck does, you can give him some of these shiny tokens which are like a promise that you'll...

Ah, fuckit.  I'll explain it to you in game if I ever see your ignorant ass in there again   Tongue

Not at all.  It's a direct consequence of working for years and years in environments where people say shit like that without wincing.  It gets to you after a while...  It's kind of like osmosis, except that the semi-permeable membrane is whatever regulates your vocabulary, and instead of water it's pure distilled evil.

They just wanted the intellectual property.

They can also reform it as a loss-leader and put some cash in there to keep their intellectual brand going while writing it off.  But, that would require a flush of staff as Turbites are not good at promoting good vibrations with the customers and word of mouth; Turbites are just looking at bottom line and their own ego while ignoring the customer.
