Neither tree has the feel of monk-ishness that I find appealing.
Agreed. I would have liked to see more actual combat maneouvers; offensive and defensive, active and passive. Some sort of paralyzing strike, a "throw" trip equivalent, a short-term enemy-evading tumble thing like Unearthly Reactions, maybe a speed boost like Fighters get. More passive enhancements to
unarmed damage, or perhaps some sort of cleaving stun or daze effect similar to the Acrobat's AoE trip attack. Reward higher monk levels by building on core abilities; nothing too drastic, just stuff like a few seconds of displacement after an Abundant Step, or some sort of minimum-12-levels scaling to the incorporeality from Shadow Veil.
Henshin could have granted more mystical stuff like Power Word or Symbol equivalents (I'm thinking of the Chinese traditions of magic with symbols scribed on rice paper here), maybe DDoor or even charm abilities. As it is, it's a bit of a mess. I've never liked the feel of Ninja Spy very much, even in PnP, and there's a lot of garbage in all three trees. I also can't shake the feeling that what's driving a lot of the enhancements is a "we can't fix handwraps so how about we encourage them to use weapons?" approach to things, which is just sad-making.
