Rollcage, Wipeout(several different incarnations) and GTA are the only games that had music that I would listen too.  Usually I turn down the music because I'd rather hear the explosions or other sound effects and if I wanted to listen to music, I prefer to have it coming out a different set of speakers.  I also just don't like a lot of the music that video games end up with.  Some may fit thematically which is great but I would just rather turn that shit down. 

If I can't turn it down, it tends to play when I don't want it, Call of Duty(the very first CoD set in WWII) comes to mind.  Having a nice assault to the bunker and the music started to play.  I have the speakers turned way up so I can really feel the explosions and the fucking music starts playing and it is way to loud for what I had the volume set.  I don't think I've encountered many games since that didn't let me turn down the volume or the developers have gotten smart and realized people don't like the fucking music when they are having a nice loud assault on a bunker.

If it is racing games, it really depends.  F1 or NASCAR, no way.  I like to play full races and don't want to hear the same shit too much.  Racing games that had short races, 1 song at most long, I didn't mind so much.  Eventually though, I would start to hear it too much but by that time, I pretty much finished the game.

Star Control 2 discovering the Arilouuilo,  Awesome instrumental.
nes the legend of zelda, can't get dungeon2 out of my head lolz.
Chrono Trigger, fighting the cool ass dark wizard to get to play or kill midway through.  That fight has good music.
Fallout 2 vegas, there's a wilderness instrumental thats bizarre, badass.  Love the sound.  Aluring and addicting.
